I guess it must be cheaper to buy an editor than to rent one.
Note that this is not a knock against Martha, who is smart and effective and whom I would hire if I ran a manufacturer.
Hikvision PR challenges are increasing as understanding of the company's ownership by the Chinese government broadens and concerns about the company's relentless race to the bottom intensifies.
Now, Hikvision has made a good move hiring a veteran trade magazine editor to help counteract that.

who is smart and effective
Effective at what? I do not know her so I can only base my opinion on reading her work but her work is poor. Even for trade magazine standards, she typically rewrote press releases and ran softball interviews for manufacturers / advertisers.

Which was the work she was expected to do. That's what the job is, advertorial creation and collation.
Working for manufacturers is simply far more lucrative for editors, given the higher pay scale.
But not all trade editors have succumbed to the corporate lure. Credit should be given to those few who have resisted direct employment and total subjugation.
Names come to mind, Ralph Jensen/Fred Jones/et al, of those who have steadfastly feigned independence and but have not sacrificed the spoils which come to those who can seemingly operate at arms-length, but under-thumb.
Isn't that a more lucrative option?

I believe Ralph Jensen is on the business side and accordingly gets paid more. Notice the experience section of his LinkedIn profile lists him as 'associate publisher'. Indeed, multiple manufacturers have mentioned how Jensen pushes manufacturers to buy ads, not something a 'pure' editor, even in a trade mag, would do.
Update: Entwistle has left Hikvision and went to Eagle Eye:
She joined Hikvision USA at its peak, though not sure what she could have done to stop the fall.
I am a little surprised EEN wanted to hire her. I think they could attract someone more skilled.
She has connections and experience and for a 'communications manager' role in a company with a few hundred employees, I think it's a solid hire.
