Manufacturers And Reed Speak on Planned July 2020 ISC West

By John Honovich, Published Mar 11, 2020, 10:56am EDT (Info+)

Last week, the drama of the March 2020 ISC West cancellation transfixed much of the industry. Now, with the planned July 2020 edition, many are wondering what will happen.

IPVM gathered extensive feedback from Reed Exhibitions, the show's organizer and from 200+ manufacturers about what they expect in July, including:

  • Projected show attendance from Reed and from manufacturers
  • Key drivers helping and hurting a planned July 2020 show
  • What happens to manufacturers who cancelled already for ISC West
  • Possibility of credits or refunds for exhibitors to future shows (e.g., 2021)
  • Concerns over how the cancellation / postponement was handled
  • What manufacturers think about the planned July 2020 show
  • Potential for cancelling the July 2020 show

I think July is a horrible time! Most people already have summer vacations planned and Vegas will be more crowded than normal because of this.

I would add:

Many of the contractors that assemble/disassemble the massive booths may not be available on short notice. I suspect they plan their schedules at least a year in advance.

I'm concerned with the fact that they only mentioned July as the postponed time, not a particular date range in July..I guess I'm thinking that they are unsure that it will happen at all in July or else release the dates..IFSEC announced the postponed month and dates immediately..

I just checked with the Sands and a representative said that "show management has not provided them the dates yet."

Does the fact that WHO has declared a pandemic change things? Meaning this could be what they needed to meet the contractual obligation for their insurance of they make a claim for loss of revenue after canceling the show??

Personally i do believe that the show should be cancelled until 2021 due to the nature of the worlds affairs. But, I do have a couple of immediate concerns.

1. Everyone seems to be discussing how the Exhibitors are being treated / handled in this situation. What about the Attendees? I know it's easier to get statements from the companies. But it would be nice to know what the attendees think of this.

2. I as an attendee have not received any e-mail or communications from Reed, SIA, or anyone for that matter that the show has been postponed. I had to hear it from IPVM. Granted it's another great reason why i subscribe to IPVM. But still.

Just my two loonies worth.

#3, thanks for your good first comment!

We can definitely get statements from attendees. We did manufacturers here because they have the most money involved and their actions can drive the event.

We do survey attendees, e.g., in Cancel or Not? Industry Split Over ISC West we found lots of integrators were cancelling for the March show. The general pattern we found is that attendees are more likely to cancel since they have less money to lose while it is harder for exhibitors since Reed has a lot of their money.

Reed did give feedback on one attendee related matter:

Attendee expo hall and conference passes will rollover to ISC West July 2020.

That makes sense. The challenge is how Reed will be able to tell what percentage of these attendees will still come in July?

I as an attendee have not received any e-mail or communications from Reed, SIA, or anyone for that matter

You probably did or at least one was sent to you but the mass email was confusing because the title totally hid the cancel/postponement. Here it is below from last Friday:

It's buried in the last 2 lines of the first paragraph.

Hi John,

I did not receive that e-mail. I have checked my spam / junk folders, and nothing from ISC West. May be a glitch, but nothing here. Hopefully i'm one of the few that did not receive it.

Thank you for the reply.

Brandon, Reed says:

An email was sent to everyone. Even ISC customers who had not registered for ISC West ‘20, just to make sure we didn’t miss anyone

I believe that, e.g., I was not registered for '20 and I received it.

The challenge with email is deliverability, spam, unsubscribes, etc. Also, the uninformative title likely cause many who receive it to overlook it.

also, the buried statement itself is written in a matter-of-fact, by-the-way, fyi, icymi voice,

ISC West, scheduled to be held March 17-20, will now occur in July...

like it's a minor scheduling conflict:

Why are the July dates not being published yet? They either have a space/location agreement, or they do not. If they have the agreement, people need to know ASAP to start planning travel and logistics around these dates. If they do NOT have confirmed days, then they shouldn't be setting any expectations yet.

This event is becoming a test of "how bad can we make ISC West 2020".

Does anyone know what is going on at Reed today?

I'm still being asked to prepare accordingly for July and instead, I'm sitting here utterly perplexed...so I thought maybe the IPVM community could provide some answers or advice...

NBA cancels until further notice....ISC West is a security show. And yes jobs depend on it and it makes up part of the security industry ecosystem and no doubt drives value within the security industry but it is not the NBA nor the Olympics, the Super Bowl...

And if the US travel ban is extended when many Schengen countries will not have reached their infection peak in 30 days does that mean no one from headquarters of Axis, Salto, Bosch, Boon Edam, the list could go on...can not attend? Or Reed will advise them to fly via London and Dublin? At least as the travel ban stands.

The delay to July (with no dates to shift travel or hotel bookings or ability to seriously mitigate and then plan accordingly) always seemed a little optimistic but surely now it's getting slightly less optimistic.

Or am I not understanding something that people maybe be aware of through dialogue with Reed? What am I missing here?

This is a good point but I would emphasize that, even if they are allowed, I highly doubt that Europeans (especially Scandinavians) are going to sacrifice their short summer period to go to ISC West in July. While the US is heavy in vacation mode in July, it's nothing like I have seen in Europe where lots of companies nearly shut down in that time period.

That is true but I think (not entirely sure) that Scandinavians start their vacations in June as that is often cited as a problem with the previous IFSEC dates in June. And then yes central Europe pretty much shuts down from mid-late July through August and even start September.

Some people yes will take a 3-4 week vacation...and who knows if they will be willing to shift plans to accommodate ISC. But some of those people would normally head to the Algarve or Adriatic Coast or the Spanish Costas...will they even be able to...

Uncertainty like never before...

The health of our integrators, vendors, staff and all PSA TEC attendees is our top priority. PSA’s TEC 2020 is planned to move forward as scheduled April 20 – 23rd. At present, we do not intend to cancel or postpone the show. PSA is looking at alternate options should the current situation escalate.

Our goal is to decide within a timeline that gives all attendees ample notice to adjust travel plans as needed. We will closely follow CDC guidelines, local and state public health authorities and the US State Department/Federal Government travel rules related to the COVID-19 virus. We appreciate your patience and support during this unprecedented time. We hope everyone remains healthy and safe.

Dear WGPC Delegates, Presenters, Sponsors and Exhibitors,

It’s with a lump in my throat that I have to tell you that we are postponing WGPC 2020, originally scheduled for March 23-26. In light of the data and information that has become available to us this week, especially in the last 24 hours, I feel this is the right thing to do given the current situation with the coronavirus outbreak. I am sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you.

We have rescheduled the show at the Tropicana Las Vegas for October 5-8, 2020. If you paid for a conference pass, expo pass, sponsorship or exhibition booth at WGPC 2020 March 23-26 your registration and fees will be rolled over towards participation at WGPC 2020, October 5-8. If you have any questions, please email or call Jo at 702-407-9900.

Jo and I are gutted by the postponement of our show and the disruption it may have caused you. We were really looking forward to a great event in 11 days and catching up with all of our friends. The last week has been tough but a lot of you have been gracious and supportive. We really appreciate it. It reminds us of how lucky we are and why the show must go on. With the extra time for practice, the WGPC 2020 (October version) show will not only go on - it will be even better.

I look forward to shaking your hand (yes, your hand) in October.

Sincerely

Reed reimburses participants provides links to airline change fees...

As of March 12, 2020
We understand that the COVID‐19 virus may create travel challenges for our customers. Currently, many airlines are waiving change fees for new and previously booked travel.
We have provided links to the change fee waiver statements of the major US carriers below. We encourage you to check their website to confirm you have the most up to date information for your airline. Please note that the change fee waiver typically allows tickets to be re‐booked for future travel with that airline waiving any change fees; the ticketholder is still responsible for any cost difference of the future fair [sic].

The thinking is that social distancing and other containment measures + rising temperatures will drive infections down. The 'math' might be true absent efforts to stop it but the 'math' can be impacted by countermeasures.

Are REED living on a different planet to humanity? Are they not reading newspapers, watching the news, listening to experts?

Shameful and shameless.

Why are they not doing the honourable, sensible and safe thing by simply cancelling, moving forward and preparing for 2021. Are they that gREEDy that they couldn’t bear refunding exhibitors.

All creditable health forecasters have stated that we (Europe and US) will be at peak-COVID-19 in June/July. What does REED know that the W.H.O do not?

Oh and one other thing.....if we have some global miracle and we all wish hard enough that this virus miraculously disappears who wants to go to Vegas in July......

If this wasn’t so serious it would be laughable

Based on predictions of the spread of the virus, the death rate and the age range of those most likely to die, many of us on this forum could be burying parents and other older love ones come July.

And so attendance numbers, floor space refunds, planned vacations, the heat in Las Vegas, etc. are certainly not top of my mind.

Money, career progression, and sales leads cannot bring the people you love back from the dead.

I would rather die myself than attend this utter disgusting, disgraceful debacle that puts money over human life otherwise known as ISC West. And not just this year, but any year thereafter.
