19 Facial Recognition Providers Profiled
IPVM interviewed 19 facial recognition providers at ISC West to understand their claimed accuracy, success and positioning.
9 from China, where facial recognition has received the most significant recent support:
- Dahua: "interest but not adoption"
- Facego: Big parent company, poor marketing
- Hikvision: Downplayed
- Longse: Fac Rec "Just for Show"
- Qualvision: "Frank Comments on NDAA, Face Rec Hype"
- Sunell: Bold Claims
- TVT: "that's gonna piss our customers off"
- ZKTeco: Claims World’s Best Facial Recognition, Calls Hikvision “Cheap Chinese”
Note: China's most prominent facial recognition providers, SenseTime, Megvii Face++, and Yitu did not attend ISC West.
And another 11 outside of China, mostly US, with one each from Australia, Japan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan:
- Avycon: ''It Can Detect A Face"
- Axxonsoft: Frank Comments on 'Accuracy' Ratings
- Ayonix: Emphasis on Speed
- Ever AI: Positions Itself As China/Russia Competitor
- Deepcam: Selling $59 'Facial Recognition' Cams
- Faceron: Obscure Operations
- Geovision: 3D Face Map And Gender Recommendations
- iOmniscient: "20x Cheaper", Touts Chinese Army as Client
- Panasonic: 'We Beat NEC'
- Real Networks / SAFR: US Based Facial Recognition for Schools Solution
- Tough Dog: Tough Time Selling Face Rec Solutions
- Virdi: World's Best / No Evidence
Inside this report, we provide detail and analysis on each one plus trends found.
Executive *******
** ***** *********** *********, **** ** the *******'* ***********, *****, ********, ***********, and ******* ** **** *** *** facial *********** ********. * *** ****** stood ***:
- Inaccurate ******** ******: many companies said their face rec software had "98%" or "99%" accuracy but were unclear about how they derived them or what that meant in real use. Given the vagueness, we would be skeptical.
- Sourcing: While most firms claim their software is entirely their own, one white labeler told IPVM this was not always the case; OEM-ing is quite common across facial recognition providers.
- GDPR: several companies stated their facial recognition solution was "GDPR compliant", an inaccurate claim since no products can be **** *********.
- Unsure ***** *** ****: IPVM heard frank comments from some distributors that most average customers didn't need facial recognition, with one describing it as more of an "industry trend" rather than a client-driven one.
** ***** ** ******* ******:
- Education: in China, facial recognition firms are increasingly eyeing the education access control market - Sunell, for example, has launched face rec-integrated thermal cameras that detect when specific kids get sick. IPVM also interviewed a subsidiary of a controversial Chinese company 'scoring' students using face analytics to tell whether they're paying attention. The field is smaller in the US but still present with firm SAFR, who we also profiled.
- Less ** **** **** *** ******* *******: Dahua and Hikvision's facial recognition displays were notably muted, with both booths giving significantly less play to the technology than in the past.
- Wider ************: IPVM found one China-US company pushing face rec for retail at rock-bottom prices ($59 per camera with an $8 per month subscription) and another selling facial recognition recorders for less than $1,000, signs that a race to the bottom mentality has infiltrated facial recognition as well. However, how well those super low-cost facial recognition recorders work is questionable.

Both firms are increasingly competing with SenseTime and Face++ for big government projects, he said, claiming SenseTime was “very powerful” and likely offered the best facial recognition system in China. "Most [of SenseTime's R&D employees] are scientists, not engineers," unlike Hikvision, Wu said.

-Infra *** ********* (Suprema and others): these are based on Light emission + IR sensors + Algorithm + processing power. Advantage of IR are: distance 15cm to 1.5m (it filters background and all related issues), works in any light conditions (unlike CCTV that can take a face with sun from the side), makeup/painting on face, Face Face/Images detection (easier than Optical). These ones are safe enough to be used for white listing (=access control).

GDPR covers the collection of data - Camera - the process of data - facial pattern, the storage of data etc.etc - Legitimate use of AFPR is not just covered by GDPR but by lots of other regs such as, DPA 2018, PERC2019, ECHR, Human Rights Act 1998, civil liberty etc. We post a fail bit on LinkedIn and have also written a 20 page document around data protection and Facial pattern - just in the process of adding to that document.
