Exclusive: Bill Proposes Human Rights Controls On US Surveillance Tech
A new bill places export controls on US technology which enables human rights abuses abroad, potentially threatening sales of US firms like NVIDIA, Intel, Seagate, and Western Digital which produce tech used by PRC China authorities.
The bill, exclusively obtained by IPVM, mandates a government "review" to decide which items should have export controls based on "critical capabilities to enable human rights abuses", singling out fields like facial recognition and "social control".
Many PRC police 'Uyghur alert' systems run on NVIDIA and Intel chips while Seagate and Western Digital have significant China sales. While there are targeted restrictions on selling US technology to specific entities such as Hikvision and Dahua, this bill would expand US export controls more widely to a broad array of products.
In this post, IPVM examines this legislation and its potential impact.
