Silicon Valley Security Guarding Startup (Bannerman) Examined

Published Aug 24, 2017 17:05 PM

Innovation in security guard services has been limited (or comical, i.e., robots to date).

One Silicon Valley startup, Bannerman has been targeting the security guard space. When they first emerged in 2014, TechCrunch called them 'bouncers on demand' and  'uber for security'

Now Bannerman is expanding to offer the 'Salesforce of guard services', a software platform for managing and monitoring all aspects of guard deployments.

Bannerman shared details of their guard business and software platform with IPVM, in this report we analyze their potential to disrupt the guard industry and challenges faced.

Bannerman also subcontracts services to other security companies.  In California it is illegal for a security officer to be a 1099 (contractor) unless they have a PPO (Private Patrol operator license).  Many companies have gotten in trouble with the labor department for doing this.

When we were researching Guard Management Software (5 years ago) we tried most companies listed.  At the time Officer Reports did not offer GPS tracking or scheduling.  Their service used a web browser on the phone, not an app.  This has changed on their current offering.  At the time Silvertrac did not offer Geofencing or scheduling and they used bar codes instead of NFC tags.  Trackforce was over all better than what we ended up using, TrackTik.  The reason why we did not go with Trackforce was because each module had a separate charge so the monthly fee was a lot hire than TrackTik. We tried all the solutions and they all had bugs and user issues which I assume they have been fixed.  We still use TrackTik because changing to another vendor will require a lot of hours or retraining Officers and Customers.  All current companies have very similar pricing and it depends on the number of devices and the number of Officers.  Like all software companies there are always issues but they try to solve them when new updates come up.  TrackTik's new 2.0 version is more stable than their old version.

Update: Bannerman's CEO and COO last year got funding for a blockchain startup called Orange. Bannerman's website is still there but I don't see any recent updates to it. Also, LinkedIn sales navigator does not show any employees joining in years.
