Great article Rob. I set one of these up in our office and the new positioning system and remote focus and zoom is really good and really quick. Much better than spending 30 minutes a camera hoping you get each image to stay in focus once you tighten down the thumb screw.

Good report Rob.

Curious, what exactly is indicated by the h.264 checkbox?

Does it mean baseline h.264 without zipstream, or the absence of h.265, or?

It means that the H.264 stream connected and streamed properly and basic configuration was available from the VMS. We will clarify that wording in these charts going forward.

For the sake of clarity, it is unclear if the camera supports h.265 of not. The Axis documentation is unclear as well.

Currently it does not, it is H.264 with Zipstream. The datasheet lists codec specifics.

Interesting, I wonder if Axis is planning firmware upgrades to H.265, they seem behind on this. Guess we will find out their plans at ISC West

I have neve seen any camera capable of adding a new codec with a firmware update. It is based on the hardware capabilities.

Apologies, I should have been more specific, I am shocked that the encoder chipset Axis is spec'ing on the cameras isn't capable of h.265. I was speculating that it is, and we would see firmware update to enable.

Nicholas, we have not seen Axis relative lack of H.265 (they do have H.265 on a few new models) being a competitive issue. For example, our recent integrator favorability study covering Axis had no complaints about that. I am sure some people see that as an objection but it seems to be limited.

What version of NX Witness was used that only required one license?

Thanks for pointing this out. Our Nx Witness version (3.2.0.20839) and connected the camera to double check licensing requirements. It does require one license per channel, not one per unit. I've updated the summary and chart above.

If you contact nx, they can get you temporary licenses for the extra channels until they can release a patch update to correctly handle a new multi imager with 1 license.

We've added a short section to the test after noticing one thing:

Made In Mexico

The P3717-PLE lists its country of origin as Mexico, the first camera we have seen to do so, Axis or otherwise. Axis states that they now manufacture several products in Mexico, and that it is an "interesting manufacturing location going forward."

If anyone has seen other Axis models made in Mexico, or other brands, we'd be interested to hear it.

But where is the SOC from?

Update:

Added a section explaining VMD4 performance. VMD4 rejected false alarms from common sources such as blinking lights, shadows, drastic light changes, and did not miss any detections on people in the scene, although it did alert on swaying foliage in the scene even with the setting for swaying objects maxed out.

Has there been any testing integrating the camera using Onvif and did the VMD analytic work via Onvif?

As anyone an explanation about the use of the little hole on the back of the camera ? I've read the installation guide and searched on internet without find an answer...

It could be a problem if there's a water infiltration from the pole mount adapter even if i use the rubber gasket for the utp cable...

Thank you very much.

I'm actually not 100% sure on that. I just asked Axis. I suspect it has something to do with cooling or removing moisture from the camera, as I've seen similar ports on other cameras, but never quite like that. I'll reply here when they respond.
