Favorite Request-to-Exit (RTE) Manufacturers 2018
Request To Exit devices like motion sensors and lock releasing push-buttons are a part of almost every access install, but who makes the equipment integrators most prefer? Big brands like (alphabetically) Assa, Bosch, Honeywell and Tyco are common choices but who is the favorite?
RTE devices address the problem of exiting since The Codes Behind Access Control often mandate egress with 'no special effort' or additional steps like scanning badges. To maintain compliance, devices like RTE REX (motion sensors), 'Push to Exit' push-buttons, glassbreak sensors, and even pressure-sensitive pads are used to automatically drop power to maglocks and electronic latches, strikes, and bolts when users approach exit doors from the inside.
148 integrators told us who their favorite RTE manufacturer was and why. We detail the top 5 finishers and share dozens of integrator comments on why they chose what they did.

Well if that's not the best reason I'VE ever heard...
- "Kantech T-Rex - no reason why, we just always ordered them and never looked elsewhere."
:)
In fairness, I think many access designers mirror that sentiment when explaining why they pick what they do!
That should terrify people using those integration companies... :) But I guess that's what due diligence is for.
I find a lot of intrusion and access control companies prefer to use a brand or product they know whenever possible for as long as possible.
Surveillance-first companies are very open to experimentation in comparison, probably because surveillance products tend to be discontinued and replaced much faster than intrusion or access products, so they're used to keeping an open mind about new technology.
This is an interesting observation. I would agree though, we we're a surveillance-first company and we are very open to making sure we have the right product. The company I came from used whatever was on special.
We use the RCR-REX from Interlogix because it has a dual tech sensor. Years ago we used the ds-150 and 160's but they're easy to trip from the secure side with a can of air or even a sheet of paper slid under the door.
even a sheet of paper slid under the door.
It reminds me of this: Access Control Exploits: Risky PIRs?
Do you have another REX you use now with dual-tech since Interlogix is out of business?
I was just thinking yesterday as I was preparing some standards and writing in the undercabinet panic button specs, IPVM should do some ancillary device comparisons/testing.
Nice! It's always good to see other perspectives on devices like this. Would be great to see more. I'm sure it's much cheaper than camera shootouts too.
Thanks!
IS310WH from Honeywell. I prefer devices with terminals vs pigtail. They have been reliable, are competitive in price.
This is about the most ridiculous post I have ever seen from IPVM - why are you reviewing an outdated, obsolete (except for code required mag lock applications) application such as a motion REX? Provide / spec / install an integrated REX in your design. Please move out of 1990.
We survey integrators to see what they are using. It gives a factual basis for understanding the market. This does not mean you or I or anyone needs to agree with what is being used.
I've felt this way since I began stepping from enterprise datacenter roles to physical security design. It feels like this industry is inherently 10-15 years behind most security and technology standards. I understand not progressing just for progress sake, but man, there are a LOT of areas that current tech can and does solve a lot of these issues.
there are a LOT of areas that current tech can and does solve a lot of these issues.
What 'current tech' do you mean? Dual tech sensors? Microwave?
Undisclosed #4,
Please define integrated REX.
Do you mean integrated in the door hardware or the hand set?
This is is not a review. This is a survey taken of members. Out of 148 responses, there was one mention of using a lock integrated REX.
Our question asked about RTE in general, not just REX.
Being an end user, I'll never install another motion REX again in my system if I can help it. Why? Too many false alarms on door forced. If people 'hug' the wall and then turn and go out of the door, they can get out without the REX hitting them. It makes my door forced alarms and live view activity pretty much worthless. Integrated REX from here on out.
