Class 1 Assignment - Report The Focal Length And Angle Of View (Aov) For 3 Cameras

Hello! For your first assignment, look up and report focal length and AoV values using the IPVM Camera Finder.

Here are my results:

  • ACTi - B51:
    • Fixed focus = 1.9mm lens
    • AoV = 129 degrees
  • Arecont - AV5255PMIR-SAH:
    • Varifocal lens = 3.0 - 8.0mm
    • AoV = 43 - 113 degrees
  • Hikvision - DS-2DE4220:
    • Varifocal lens = 4.2 - 94.0mm
    • AoV = 3 - 58 degrees

An interesting find on the Hikvision DS-2DE4220; the widest angle at 4.2mm is only 58 degrees while the telephoto angle is 3 degrees. That is a very tightly zoomed shot.

In the camera finder, locate the camera you want to report on and click on it to open a new page. Scroll down and locate the 'Lens / Imaging' section, this is where you will find this information:

You can choose any 3 cameras you like. The lenses can be fixed, varifocal, motorized, etc. Report any interesting observations or questions that come up as you are researching this.

An interesting find on the AXIS F1025 sensor gets 92 degrees even though the Fixed focal Length is 3.7mm (usually associated with much narrower Angle). Also manufacturer lists a second AoV in 720p as 56 degrees.

I was looking at this one too. The HB74HD1 is a fixed lens and has AoV listed at 79.7°

IPVM calulator has it listed as None or Variable at two different places.

Axis Q1932-E 35mm: Imager Size - 1/4", Imager Type - CCD, Lens Focal Length - 35mm, AoV - 18 degress.

For imager type, there are two: CMOS and CCD. What's the difference?

How does the Avigilon camera have an Imager Size of 1/2.3"?

1 - CMOS and CCD are different kind of sensor that share some similarities.

2 - Avigilon Imager 1/2.3"

Well i guess they thought it would be cool to have this option, as they have some very different option regarding their camera.

1/2.3" is more common for digital cameras (dslr, etc). Canon PowerShot uses 1/2.3".

3- Why does the Bosch camera have two ranges for Lens Focal Length and AoV?

If you check their datasheet, there is three option of lenses.

These are 3 of the cameras that we have recently (2 weeks ago) installed in a 52 camera project in one of our buildings on campus.

Something that stands out to me - the WV-SFR631L and the WV-SFR531 are both domes from the same manufacture, they both have a 2.8mm option on the varifocal lens, but the AoV is significantly wider at 102 degrees vs 89 degrees.

At first i though it could be maybe lower than 3 or 2mm but No 0.0mm on the datasheet =(

Hi IPVM Instructors

I had a question about class 1 assignment. I am very much anticipating how to aquire the same ninja status you have, for the camera calculator. I wanted to check out a camera (OE-C6412)we are utilizing with many of our current customers. However, I am having some issues finding the focal length of the OE-C6412 camera. I have attached a screen shot of what I see when I select and load this camera, compared to what I see when I load the ACTi - B51. The B51 shows the focal length however the OE-C6412 only shows an AoV slide bar. Do I have something set incorrectly on the calculator, which would not allow me to see the Focal Length? Or is there some equation I need to use to calculate the Focal Length?

Also I had asked a few questions about the camera calculator during the class yesterday and unsure if I had received a response about it. Would you also be able to confirm that my questions are being seen during the live class? I have added the questions which I added during the class, below.

  1. Will you be going over more in depth, details about using the camera calculator?
  2. Will you be going over more about the camera imager size and it's relation to the effect it has on the image? This was pretty daunting and I wanted to make sure I fully understand the concepts you taught in class 1.

Ron, the Arecont is a multi-imager, so it is using multiple sensors to provide the 180° FoV.

Here are my results:

  • 3xLogic VX-3PV-B-I
    • Varifocal lens = 2.8mm - 12.0mm lens
    • AoV = 31.9 - 105.2 degrees
  • 3xLogic VX-3P4/28-MD-I
    • Fixed focus = 4.0mm
    • AoV = 75.8 degrees
  • 3xLogic VX-3P28-MD-IA
    • Fixed focus = 2.8mm
    • AoV = 86 degrees

Comments: As expected the shorter the length of the lens the wider the AoV.

As expected the shorter the length of the lens, the wider the AoV. Varifocal has noticeably higher AoV (105.2 degrees at 2.8mm compared to the 86 degree AoV found in the 2.8 fixed lens).

I am a camera rookie, It seems to me that Directional box camera are a superior out door device to fisheye cameras simply because of placement. On the other hand the 360 degree Fisheye could provide more detail in all directions. Are outdoor fisheyes practical?

They can be depending on what the intended use is, like an overview of a small area. Remember that the PPF for a fisheye is going to drop drastically when compared to a box/bullet/dome, e.g.:

With a 5MP panoramic, at 20 feet away from the camera, the PPF is ~21
With a 5MP 'conventional' 60° lens, at 20 feet away from the camera, the PPF is ~130

different Manufacturers, but if i check both Axis, Bosch, and also check all other camera posted here, all give very wide varieties for the widest angle if it is 2,3 or 4. even though i though that the difference between 2 or 3 might not be that big, it seems that each manufacturer has their own different angles.

I wanted to compare 4MP cameras between the high-end and mid range manufacturers. In my research I found that there are not as many options in 4MP resolution as compared to 2mp and 5mp. Aside from that the imager size of the Hikvision being 1/2.8" makes for a narrower AoV.
