Security Dealer 'Social Media Contractor' Program

By John Honovich, Published Jun 25, 2019, 11:38am EDT

A $20,000 video surveillance system can be yours for free if you are willing to post on social media about the security dealer.

Good deal, bad deal or scam?

This issue arose at IPCamTalk where forum participants roundly condemned this as a 'scam'.

IPVM spoke both with the prospect who received this offer and the owner of the dealer, Ageint Security to better understand what is being provided and what concerns there might be.

This is akin to buying positive reviews from individuals who will post positive reviews for a fee. If not illegal (and for the record, I think it is) it is most definitely frowned upon.

I’d say take the equipment!  and then tell the truth!

Month 1 Post:

My experience so far with Ageint has been favorable, as they have provided me with my entire system free of charge, with the understanding that I will report the favorable things I find.

Which I will; however nothing in the contract expressly prohibits me from reporting on any problems I encounter*.  I am hopeful that any problems will be addressed quickly by Ageint, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to customer service.

Month 2 Post:

One the things I love about this system, it didn’t cost me anything! etc...

This addresses the possible FTC violation.

Moreover, Ageint is highly unlikely to try to back out of the contract, due to the negative posts that would surely ensue.

Ageint would instead find it best to provide an extra level of support and care to make them look as good as possible.

*according to the excerpt of the contract shown

Sounds like the old roofing scam about having the contractor pay the insurance deductible in exchange for "advertising"

This isn't a scam, it's just not a great deal.  I would rather get a few quotes, pay and be done than having to post 1-3 comments for the next 60months... :)
