Hikvision 4K Camera Shootout

By Ethan Ace, Published Aug 02, 2019, 08:57am EDT

With their latest Smart Series 5 cameras, Hikvision is claiming cameras "fully loaded" with "state-of-the-art technology for high performance and enterprise applications." But how does this compare to their lower cost Performance Series which claims a similar feature set at a much lower price or the even lower cost Value Series, which won our 4K / 8MP fixed lens shootout?

Great report, thank you. I know IPVM is given a lot of crap for regularly ripping on Hikvision but reports like this should honestly demonstrate that from a technical perspective, you guys are more interested in showing legit pros and cons and lauding good performance when you see it.

Thanks for the review, very useful especially the bitrate comparison. I'm currently evaluating the possibility of connecting a Hikvision DVR to several 4K cameras across a WAN circuit that has sufficient bandwidth available. To assist my calculations, would you happen to have any indicative bitrates for non-motion scenes in comparison to motion in the scene for H.265+?

For really, really still scenes, I have seen bitrates float as low as ~80-90 Kb/s for a 4K stream. But keep in mind that non-motion to a camera and to a human are two different things. A repetitive pattern on concrete or asphalt, blades of grass, foliage, all those patterns while cause a camera's coder to encode extra noise due to how many edges are present in the scene, even if they aren't moving. That will drive bitrate up.

Because of that, I'd say probably 400-500 Kb/s for these cameras is the lowest I would expect. You might get a little bit lower, but for 4K, I wouldn't expect it.

You show bitrate comparisons using H.265+, but you didn't mention that using the + codecs, you lose most of the analytics.

Wait, you know how poorly Hikvision analytics work, right? :)

I think that's a good point more fundamentally, we should call out such limitations because some people may use them.
