Hands-Free Bathroom Doors For Coronavirus Mitigation

By Brian Rhodes, Published Apr 10, 2020, 07:42am EDT (Info+)

Coronavirus has increased concerns about picking up germs, especially from bathrooms.

Instead of cleaning handles after every user, companies have started pitching interesting, but costly, automatic operator solutions for hands-free door operation.

Inside we examine one manufacturer's 'hands-free' pitch, break down the costs, look at similar solutions, and discuss other non-powered solutions.

Only the best truck stops have the StepNpull... I love those things, they’re genius. I’ve noticed that BBQ restaurants tend to have them too. ‘Murica. And here they’re blaming folks in the south for not cooperating in the mitigation of the virus. ”Ya’ll get outta here... we’ve got StepNpull.”

StepNpull may just be the very device which once again divides the north and south, and all for just three easy payments of $9.99. There’s that, or the genius move of opening the bathroom door with an extra hand towel before walking out... that solution is free.

Pffft, $3,000 for a door-opening device.

Either I am not observant or they simply don't have these items in my portion of the Midwest. I have not been to many truck stops though I have been to a few barbecue joints. We don't have many traditional truck stops here - no Pilot/Flying J or similar. I cannot remember seeing a StepNpull on any occasions. It must be a different world down there.

Malls and newer stadiums out here have the door free bathrooms almost exclusively.

Also, great article IPVM.

...Why do you have to show a picture of somebody about to lick a bathroom doorknob? That's disgusting.

That’s one thing the Coronavirus hasn’t done enough of... eradicate those with no sense of humor.

I have a sense of humor. But licking bathroom doorknobs is disgusting.

Bathroom.

Doorknobs.

There is a very long list of things in this world that you should never lick. I'm fairly sure that's near the top.

I didn't see a sensor to detect if someone or something was in the doorway - would the doors stop or re-open if a child or pet was standing there?

Thanks for sharing. Brass door handles (or pull tools) are not going to be much help in reducing Coronavirus/ germs spread.

The biggest problem with Brass and Self-Disinfecting coatings is they are anti-bacterial in nature, which doesn't affect the problems of a virus like Covid-19 or even the flu.

The second issue is that while the material 'self-disinfects', it takes time. In the case of brass, it can take 3+ hours or more and the natural oils and salt (sweat) deposited by a hand can interfere with this process and increase the time even more.

The problem is that many people may touch/be infected before that base metal has a chance to kill bacteria.

In summary: cleaning door handles regularly is still prudent even if brass/antibacterial hardware is used.

No doubt. My posting of it was to show the low level of "innovation" and around trying to solve the problem. Not that this was a viable solution.

thx for the idea. should be here by Thursday.

now i just need a trunkslammer who can, totally without my knowledge, willfully and recklessly disregard the AHJ regs on permit pulling.

Camden Controls has been manufacturing ADA compliant barrier-free washroom systems for years serving many municipalities. The current Covid19 pandemic has placed enormous demands on IR sensor switches. Like all products, not are the same. The SureWave brand is designed to work with automatic door operators in hospital environments. Hospitals and nursing homes have numerous reflective stainless steel services causing some IR sensors to latch on or off. Hospitals commonly place a stainless steel cart or wheelchair near an IR sensor making some brands inoperative. All of the IR switches can be calibrated for time and sensitivity in the field.

CM-330/324/325 Series: SureWave™ Touchless Switches - Camden Door Controls

Check the differences, there has been an influx of oversea manufacturered IR switches but most cannot be calibrated in the field to best suit the application.
