US Startup Fever Inspect Examined

By Sean Patton, Published Aug 03, 2020, 10:03am EDT (Info+)

Undoubtedly late to fever cameras, this US company, Fever Inspect, led by a Ph.D. in Physics with thermal imaging expertise is trying to disrupt the market touting the "World's most cost-effective, accurate, and automated small footprint automated thermal screening".

I made a mistake recalling the lens specs, it is a 23 deg FOV lens, not 25 (we evaluated many lenses for this product). Also, the reason we disable the temperature output while connected to see the live view is for HIPAA, we don't want to enable the easy leakage of protected health information. The live display is for a second level of customer assurance that the field of view is free of any excessively hot sources, although the surface temperature mode will also flag up any heat sources as well. We designed it to be easy to install and use in line with 60601-6 usability requirements. Thank you for including us!

Bold Ad calling it a Medical Device in their ESA Ad included in today’s ESA Email Blast! Lot of Confidence, maybe some would even say over Confident claims which often are claimed to be mere puffery but think misrepresentation is the best way to state this one, not puffery!

I completely understand your skepticism, given the wide variety of questionable devices being sold today and the amount of misrepresentation and puffery out there. However, our calling this a medical device is not misrepresentation, and we have the science to back up our ability to identify fevers. Anyone selling thermal imaging devices for the customer's "intended use" of fever triage/detection/adjunct screening or however you want to call it, is indeed selling a medical device, regardless of how their marketing is worded. The difference between the Fever Inspect and the majority of what is out there, is our strong basis in science and technological development. We stand behind our product.

Actually all of these devices are indeed medical devices, per the FDA. Many of these are poorly functioning medical devices but they are all medical devices. I can understand how it’s confusing since so many of these companies claim that they are not when they actually are.
