Would Hikvision ever let Axis get bigger in China?  I'm just curious, it's been mentioned quite often on this site and others that Hikvision is government owned.  And China's government having a much larger influence than most, would they let Axis or anyone gain a sizeable foothold?  Out of curiosity, what is the breakdown by other countries/regions in Europe and North America?

China's government policy against foreign firms goes beyond Hikvision. We mentioned this in a recent post: even the Chinese government has long acknowledged their desire to favor their own video surveillance firms inside of China:

Dahua and Hikvision combined report ~$6 billion USD China domestic revenue. I doubt Axis is doing more than $50 million / $0.05 billion in China (we know Axis is only doing $130 million for all Asia including Japan and Australia places were it certainly does fairly well; also Axis, like most western video surveillance manufacturers primarily get business inside China from Western multinationals who have offices inside of China). Also, keep in mind Axis manufacturers in China those products that it sells in China, an exception for Axis given China's protectionist tactics.

Net/net, Axis is substantially under 1% of China's market share. In North America, by contrast, Axis is 15% of the market, a dramatic difference.

dwarf Axis by easily 40x (40,000%)

There is either an extra zero here or one missing.
