Restaurant Security Manager Interview

Published May 06, 2019 14:46 PM

Wright’s Gourmet House in Tampa, Florida has been around for over 50 years. During most of that time, there were no security measures in place. Now they have cameras and access control in place to help management in their mission: “Make sure people are safe. The food has to be safe, the workplace has to be safe.”

Restaurant Security Manager4

Wright’s President and de facto Security Manager Jeff Mount [link no longer available] became an IPVM member in 2013 concurrent with his first visit to ISC West. Mount says he joined IPVM to help him make the decision on what equipment to buy to help protect his employees and customers.

Inside this note we look at the following:

  • How his gut kept him clear of now-banned Chinese products, despite a $30-$40,000 savings
  • Why he loves his current security manufacturer
  • How technology helps him with consistency
  • How Axis, Vivotek, and Mobotix led to a "mess"
  • How customers today expect to see cameras

Great story Dan G - and great insights from Jeff!

I particularly liked Jeff's use of the term knucklehead - which reminded me of Frank Caliendo doing Charles Barkley

Good review, I like how you asked about remote abilities and cyber security. As for now, do not put the cameras on your GWHAdmin network!  Lock it down, keep in mind you just broadcast you have 49 cameras. Make sure you got your security tight as can be firmware, firmware, firmware. Use your integrator and Avigilon to help you out with that.

Edit: The food on all the reviews looks good!

I was interested in reading why Axis, Vivotek, Mobotix were a "mess" but clearly it was the people who installed it were incompetent by not offering a VMS.  Back then and still today, Axis and Vivotek are great manufacturers.  A more open VMS like Milestone or Genetec would have been just as good as Avigilon, if not better.

A good reminder that it's often not the product, but the implementation of the product, that ultimately defines its quality.

How cool to see a review of somewhere in my own back yard. Wright's really is good food and experience, and I'd recommend to anyone living or passing through Tampa.

This was a pretty good agnostic case study.
