160+ Integrators answered:

What do you think the top industry trend will be in 2019? Why?

AI / video analytics was the run-away winner with half of all respondents, with no other trend coming close.

However, IPVM forecasts that, while analytics will improve in 2019, it will disappoint integrators overall as the improvements still needed outstrip the technology that will be offered in 2019.

Inside this note, we examine the trends, what will hold analytics back and more.

If 2018 is the peak of inflated expectations, what was 2006? And if we are at the peak now, that implies low productivity from AI video analytics for the next few years, yes/no?

A) I don't think we've quite peaked on expectations yet, the arrow is still a bit before the apex of the curve.

B) 2006's expectations were lower than now, though we didn't know that at the time. I think AI in general, and companies from Avigilon to Xiongmai all hyping AI and analytics that we have much higher overall expectations now, also partially due to the growth of IP cameras, which create a theoretical large installable base for algorithms.

C) I do think "productivity" of some sort will decline when the random Chinese companies all touting AI realize that it's hard, and it doesn't just directly translate to more sales. That would likely be mid 2020.

This is so true. Half this stuff doesn't work as well as they claim.
