Princeton Identity Access 200 Iris Scanners Examined

Published Jun 05, 2018 17:14 PM

Iris recently registered a big jump as a preferred biometric in our Favorite Biometrics survey, but access-ready options can be difficult to find.

Princeton Identity, the 2016 spinoff of iris focused SRI Sarnoff has released a new line of iris readers specifically designed for access control.

Pretty interesting technology. I've been using the Stonelock Pro for facial recognition and it has been working well for me. This looks like it could be just as good, and it looks cheaper.

I like the no-touch solutions, especially when these things are securing places like data centers, NOCs, and security control centers. Those are all staffed with highly specialized personnel, so it would be bad if everyone in there got the flu from touching the same door knob or biometric reader.

Michael, thanks for sharing about Stonelock Pro. Can you elaborate briefly? Curious if there are ever any errors or issues? And if so where / when? Is it '99%' or?

Hey John, I haven't experienced a single error in the 18 months or so these things have been in use. We use them in a high security area, only about 15% of our employees have a need to access that space, but none of them reported the door opening when it shouldn't have.

It's kind of fun to watch them try to fool it, they do it from time to time. Glasses, fake mustaches, all kinds of hilarious things, but none of it will work, obviously.

I had some issues integrating that into an enterprise environment, but we received new drivers and firmware from the manufacturer fairly quickly and resolved it.

One issue though, is they use multiple card reader types within the unit, so you have to be very specific with them when you order. I've received the wrong part a couple of times, so maybe they're just shaking out the supply chain issues or something.

OSS Reps

We picked up the line at our rep firm for the Pac NW area and we have seen a lot of interest in the line.  Being in the industry for the last 18+ years has made me skeptical of a lot of new things that get released, but this line really does what it says.  The fact that it can read your iris' through glasses (both prescription and non-polarized/non-mirrored sunglasses) really proved it to me.

The integration with most major ACS lines and more to come really makes it a viable product.

Previously lab tested an Alpha release unit and will soon begin a full pilot under realistic operational conditions. This will include the outdoor version (Access 250), which they will release later in the year.

I have not found anything else that can authenticate at the same speed/ distance/viewing angles and offers the potential for indoor and outdoor use. Their walk-through portal and self-enrolment kiosk solutions are also very interesting.
