Oh... just wait for the software upgrades :)
Dahua Launches Electric Cars
Embattled mega video surveillance manufacturer Dahua is now electric car manufacturer Dahua.
One person joked:
But is the joke on Dahua's critics here? Dahua has plans for its electric car business to quickly dwarf its video surveillance one.
Is Dahua just crazy or crazy like a fox?
In this note, we examine the financials behind Dahua's electric car business, its sales projections, and its impact on Dahua's now legacy video surveillance business.

bashis takes test drive
To there credit, it is not the worst looking car ever made.. quite normal in western terms...
Agreed. The front end reminds me of something else, but I can not find an exact image. I want to say either a Holden, or some older Nissan/Datsun coupe.
Where is the focus? The jack of all trades but master of none?
will these be connected to the internet?
That is actually an interesting question, given the prevalence of things like Tesla's remote software update capabilities, GMs OnStar, or whatever the system used that allowed hackers to remotely control Jeeps. It is not out of the question that these cars wind up with some form of internet connectivity.
Yes! The 2+2 will be on the Super Highway so use The Club on it while parked!
"Smart car system uses a dedicated Internet of Things communication and storage solutions to achieve high reliability, low-bandwidth data transmission and big data storage, as well as vehicles, data, users with multiple security guarantees. Can achieve intelligent control, real-time Internet, vehicle management, cloud computing and other technology applications, personalized travel services to provide strong support."
Smart move for the company, but I won’t be saving my pennies to buy one.
I suggest an unofficial "Name the New Dahua Electric Car Contest"
I'll start.
1. Botneta
2. Hackura
3. Model 888888
Are they really going to sell cars under their own name or just be an OEM...?
#8, this is a local China play so no OEMing. So just like Dahua is Dahua inside China, this will be 'Leap Motors' the brand they have picked for the auto business.
I'd consider one, but I hear the backdoor always stays open....
ba da dum... Thanks folks, I'll be here all week, don't forget to tip the waitresses
but I hear the backdoor always stays open....
Not on the patchback model...
It's cool that they are branching out and trying new things. Many manufacturers are across the board. Yamaha makes pianos and dirtbikes. Honda makes.. almost everything.
All jokes aside, I think Dahua has a quality control issue. The thought of them putting a device on the road that can literally kill people scares me. I know the initial market is China but it won't take long for them to start bringing these to the US.
Hopefully, if they ever try to come to the US, big brother will step in and make sure the cars are safe.
...if they ever try to come to the US, big brother will step in...
You mean Hik?
You mean Hik?
Nicely done... When will Hikvision release their electric car? :)
Actually we saw it yesterday in real life at the Dahua factory and it looked pretty neat, acceleration was pretty impressive too.
There wasn’t a brandname on the car yet, but the badgeplace was octagonal.
I'll not be ordering the optional reversing camera, sure the whole world doesn't have to witness what I'm about to reverse in to :-)
The only problem is that even when the car is locked, you can get in through the trunk.
:D
New WSJ article on China electric car market. It highlights a big new domestic entrant, China's yet again unfair trade policies but does not mention Dahua's entry. Key quotes:
NIO launched its first production car, the ES8 sport-utility vehicle, in Beijing on Saturday, having raised $1 billion last month in a funding round led by social-media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. Another investor is Baidu Inc., which dominates Chinese internet search.
The [NIO] ES8 starts at around $68,000 before subsidies, whereas Tesla’s Model X, which is subject to import tariffs and is ineligible for subsidies in China, costs roughly twice that here.
Update: Dahua/Leapmotor have announced their own autonomous driving AI chip:
the first domestically made artificial intelligence (AI) chip ... adopts homegrown central processing units (CPU) which is safer and controllable, according to Zhang Xingming, vice president of Dahua Technology.
That's a bold move, but with Dahua's track record, I am skeptical of how well it works and how much this is for show rather than actual usage.
You mean they might be prone to promoting vaporware? (Hey, I pulled it off with a straight face.)
When the AI in your car thinks an Axis camera display is a girl, you make damn sure not to take your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel.
Update: new China report on Dahua's Leap Motor includes wrist vein recognition to unlock doors & has face recognition in the rearview mirror:
Interesting! Some clever technology if it works, something needs to replace keyless entry on new cars - so easily overcome.
I wonder how the camera operates in pitch darkness, the thumbnail suggests its IR. How will the vein technology work in colder / rainy climates when people wear coats?
Car looks kind of o.k., kind of 70's / retro. panel gaps look tight. I guess the proof is in the pudding of what it is like under the skin.
Like an Alfa Romeo Guilia and a Frog Eyed Sprite got it on, this would be their ugly bastard child.
Apparently I still think so since it was just brought to my attention that I made this comparison before.
In all fairness the Sprite was pretty cool when it released. I learned how to drive a stick on a Austin Healey MKIII and that was a double clutching beast, but fast once you properly adjusted the three carbs.
Well if you are from Trieste it's better that you don't drive a car at all….take a tram, go by bus, sail a boat...bike
