How does this compare to bturesearch.com?

U1, The Energy Reconnect charges the internal battery from low voltage PoE, while the BTU unit requires high voltage power. The need for an high voltage power at the edge may be a disqualifier for some. Out of the box the runtime is longer for the BTU, but an external battery can also be added to increase the runtime of the Energy PDBU.

I purchased two of their latest Brownout Buddy's. The one I see in the picture looks like their beta test model. They are now on Gen 7, the units are delivering 60 watts HIPOe and they also have an auxiliary input for a 24VDC solar panel.

Gil, if you see someone copying our PdbU than you are a good source for our patent attorney to go after them protecting our world wide patent being infringed as you describe.

thanks for your info, we probably will call for your testimony for court.

By the usa law who ever buys a copy that infringe patents he is basically an infringer by himself.

thanks for the valuable information.

Are you implying you plan to sue end users? I understand the technicality of it but even suggesting that is not a smart business move. If someone is infringing on your patent, go after the producer, not the customers.

Roni, I really don't see anyone copying anything from PdbU. I simply posted a comment from John Scanlan's Poe UPs post.  As far as you bringing up patent infringement and the consequences for me or others purchasing these units, I would be careful and more diligent finding out the related information before implying that someone is copying your product. I am not sure if you visit trade shows such as ASIS 2017 where BTU Research was awarded The Peoples choice award in its class. That would have been a good place for you to get informed about the product.

Brownout Buddy

The Brownout Buddy is a 60W, POE injector designed to perform the functions of a conventional injector while ensuring a consistent power supply to edge devices.

I will go a little furder and give you information on their patent.

Regarding another post: next to come are PdbU's with a 4 port PoE switch

BTU Research already has a 4 port non-managed switch that works along with the brownout buddy switch ( which we used and we are very pleased with the results) and a fully managed Layer 3 hardened switch with up 1400 watt hrs available.

Hope this helps you clear any misunderstandings.

Regards

It can’t, look at the spec, it’s AC to PoE, a pure injector depends on the AC power, it’s not a PoE powered UPS

This product has this end user thinking out loud.

Could a PoE dome camera be manufactured with a built-in PoE UPS? That combined with edge recording could be a powerful differentiator.

Brandon, I would say that isn't a bad idea, and I'm sure anything can be built. The reason I don't see many dome cameras coming out with built in battery backup is the same you don't see a lot of professional cameras with built in wireless- installers have found it better to have this component separate for better serviceability and the choice it gives you to use any brand or type of wireless bridge you want to connect to it. Cameras with built in wireless are mostly relegated to the home consumer market where ease of installation and cheap cost is desired.

Good point Luis. Also, we wouldn't be able to power-cycle cameras from the PoE switch when needed.

Yes, and you just brought up a good point that didn't immediately occur to me at first- this would take away our ability to power cycle a camera, door controller or wireless bridge by bouncing a switch port.

But it's a great option for a high-availability requirement.

There is a jumper on board that can enable reboots every 24hrs, but not on demand.

On demand remote power control is something the manufacturer says they are addressing in future revisions.

Nice to see they thought ahead that far! It's a good start, and I know intelligence for remote rebooting also means more cost.

Being able to remotely reboot a POE camera saves us in rolling a truck and having a technician sit in traffic flip a switch off and on.

Yes, we are doing some OEM with camera manufacturers, access control, LED Street lighting, Smart Building and more.

keep in mine its a PoE powered power backup unit, no AC power, its an in-line unit.

next to come are PdbU's with a 4 port poe switch, auto fail over from wired ethernet to wireless ethernet providing continues video in addition to power backup, edge storage providing edge disater recover, audio amplier, cyber security, deep learning and more

thanks, roni herzel

Another possible use for this is for covert applications.  Need to have a mobile recording solution that can be quickly deployed.  Combine this with something like an Axis P12 or similar and record to SD.  Just a random thought.  Carry on!

You could, but the Axis P12 has a direct 12v input. You'll spend a lot less money and get a lot longer run time if you just hooked a 7ah battery to it directly.

Scott, but then what would recharge the 7ah battery after power came back? I think the appeal of the inline PDBU is it recharges itself from the switch POE power without having to install AC or swap out a fresh battery after an outage occurs.

Your point is a good one concerning cost with even greater run time, but what is one of the most difficult things to do.... getting end users to monitor and maintain their own systems and let you know it needs maintenance. I guess you could setup and auto alert to notify you when there has been an outage and now the batteries have to be swapped out so they have optimal charge, but now you're adding labor to the total cost of ownership.

Good thought. I shall not be surprised if the same UPS is enhanced with in-built storage to store the video recording in case of power failure and sync back with main system when power resumes.

Well now you're talking about making the UPS a mini NVR, which will add to the cost and not be that competitive since so many cameras now do on-board storage recording, with more systems starting to support cache and syncing between the camera and recorder.

VV

With you.

It was only an anticipated view on the same device with enhanced feature. There can always be variant of any new product, specially if the objective is to have no downtime and zero data loss; at incremental cost. The SSD based storage costs are expected to reduce soon. Of course other options like on-board storage will always remain.

I feel UPSing the PoE switch and NVR is a better solution as you have the option for much greater capacity that way, and negate the need for edge recording. This item could definitely see some unique applications however.

We have had great success specifying these products where we are putting IP/PoE access control panels (think Mercury EP-1501s) at the edge.

Great product, just remind your contractor to remove the red tab after installation!
