Brain,

Great write up to tell the real value of a VMS, not much live monitoring going on these days at least in financial vertical where I practice my skills.  I am curious to get some feedback from both the End User and Integrator Communities on what products offer the best Search UI's, everyone is different and unique in their own way.

Every VMS can do some sort of date/time or motion based search and the use of analytics or data to index POS/ATM Transactions are great tools but what about when you are just searching raw video to find that that needle?

Who has the best search tools native to their UI?  Like Brian mentioned its about how quick you can find what you need with the least amount of effort.

How does traditional search tools in the UI stand up against VCA?  Do you find any value in bolt on tools like BriefCam.

@End User #1. FD I'm CEO of Camio. The search box is the center of the UI and works with all H.264 streams. NLP time range queries aim for the least amount of effort from any browser like this:

It does make sense, and short of a twenty page discourse on the widespread view of security as a cost center, with reductions and low cost being universal, the corporate SOC and contract guards/monitoring agents are increasingly limited and/or outsourced.  This is a little counter to popular trends of proactive monitoring and incident prevention as opposed to reaction.  That said, in many industries like retail and hospitality, preventative CCTV use isn't really possible.  Analytics do help here, as does remote video verification and monitoring through platforms like Sure View and Sonitrol's 3X Logic partner.

my vote for quick and efficient search is the Avigilon platform, 5.10 is great and I've heard release 6 adds to that with the bugs now worked out.  The video "scrubbing" feature is a huge timesaver for my team.
