The guy who writes the ADI newsletter probably just Googled what he was wanting to find. You can always find a study online that supports your theory. Shame there's an entire industry behind producing made up statistics and articles.
ADI Fooled By Shady 'Research' Report
You probably see these reports. Huge, unrealistic, growth projections from firms you have never head of. And you probably do not give it a second thought, because it is obviously not legit.
And that would make you more savvy than ADI.

85% of statistics are made up on the spot...
I see ADI finding a way to hold their sales department to a higher (unachievable) standard to prop up the beliefs of an executive type who probably doesnt quite have their finger on the pulse of the industry or their own business. Hey look, this report says high growth... why arent we seeing it? Its obviously our sales people's fault! Lets change their compensation to resemble this newfound information!
In reality, they must be looking for a way to reduce expense if they are seeing reduced GP on the same revenue as much of the industry is seeing... Neat how those two things coincide...
"In reality, they must be looking for a way to reduce expense if they are seeing reduced GP on the same revenue as much of the industry is seeing"
Interesting point. One distributor made a similar comment recently noting how the drop in camera prices has cut their revenue per unit sold while their costs have remained constant. But if they try to cut costs, they will weaken their value added differentiators, so it is a tough situation.
value added differentiators.... such a perfect opportunity to put a dig in on ADI... Ill restrain myself.
I don't buy these reports but I propose those companies to send me their report for free.
And I commit to spend a full day in order to correct it.
Because you can still find some good things inside.
Sometimes I get one for free and I really help them.
I think it is important you scrutinize these 'research' reports John. Always problematic with studies making claims about the future. Frequently it's a wishful and simplistic extrapolation of historical data. And like you mention, cross-industry expertise on completely unrelated industries is all too common.
What is the relationship between video surveillance, mortgage loans and gardening?
Not being an expert in at least two of the three categories, I can't say. But according to Google, Digvjay D. is at the very top of these three seemingly unrelated disciplines.
With the possible exception of the CSO at the Lending Tree, he is the authority on cameras, carrots, and capital.
Hey, it's on the Internet_ it must be true!
There's a wonderful book "How to Lie with Statistics"
John, any thoughts on Homeland Security Research? They seem to focus only on homeland security markets. They claim to see grounds for big growth in the global IVA market. Now I wonder if it's just hype.
4, stay away from that company. A few years ago, a manufacturer angrily came to me asking why the ~$5,000 report he bought from them ('Homeland Security Research') had dozens of pages copied straight from IPVM.
That company had stolen our content and packaged it into their report. Obviously, we had not given them permission nor even knew who they were until then. The company lamely said they could not track all of their employees/contractors work but said they would remove it.
It is pretty clear it is not a real 'research' and if you pay them thousands of dollars for their 'research', prepare to be disappointed.
I had just mentioned to someone that IPVM is a better deal than those $4-5K "industry reports". I guess this is a confirmation!
IPVM should organize and consolidate product test results, company breaking news by catogries (product, market, org., financials etc.), M&A deals and many other useful information into one quarterly / semi-annual report.
