Published May 19, 2015 04:00 AM

How do you get surveillance users to buy in to the cloud?

Perhaps you can give it away for free.

That is the new offer that Genetec is adding for their many of their most loyal customers.

In this note, we examine how this works, what its potential value is and how it might impact Genetec's cloud success.

Unfortunately our customers are freaking out when they hear that they should open their security network to the Internet...

The advantages will have to outweigh the risk for these fears to be overcome. Advantages need to grow organically. The risks will remain the risks, but can be minimized through sensible implementation. There's a huge difference between slamming your DVR onto the public internet via (say) port forwarding through your firewall (and incurring all the assoicated risks) vs a DVR manufacturer designing sensible cloud connectivity into the DVR that greatly reduces potential vulnerability.

More and more we are getting used to using cloud services (google mail, docs, calendar, etc etc). The next generation will be so used to "the cloud" security will not be an issue.

Then we can re-introduce the "on-premises" cloud and swing them all back to servers and storage on site.

IMHO, we will have a better chance teaching the 'next generation' long division using paper and pencil than of bringing them down from the cloud.

I've been surprised how many people are open to using the cloud. Personally, it gave me the willies, and still does to some extent, but many organizations that have traditionally been resistant to stuff like this are jumping on. For example, In-Car and Body Worn Police video is moving to the cloud very quickly. I guess the price tag is just too compelling to ignore.

I'm really glad I got out of rank and file IT work and consulting 11 years ago. That's becoming a "buggy whip" industry very quickly.

Effectivity of Cloud solution should greatly depend on the network bandwidth availability. The efficiency of network infrasructure and cost varies from nation to nation. But most importantly, when you consider hooking high definition/megapixel cameras, this could turn out to be a costly affair unless the Telecom companies/ISPs are ready to slash their charges for a high bandwidth connection and make it more affordable. Again, Security would be a major concern consider the rising attack on cyber security.

I would be interested to hear of any large organizations specifically casino environments that choose to utilize this technology.
