Typically owners or principles of businesses dont need nor want to be "wined and dined". They dont have the time for such nonsense and are far more interested in the underlying value of the product or service being bought/sold and what it can do for their business, and arent dumb enough to settle for lesser value for the price of a lunch. And if he is that dumb, wint be in business for long.

Dinners, lunches, golf outings, fishing trips, etc are all the purview of middle management and third party consultants taking advantage of their positions as gatekeepers. Its sad really when you think about it.

I moved this to its own post. Curious to see what people think of this.

I don't have enough direct experience with 'wining and dining' to judge this but it does intuitively make sense to me.

arent dumb enough to settle for lesser value for the price of a lunch.

The one thing I would add here is that sometimes the gifts are far more than simply lunch. Fancy events, outings, trips, etc. are given too. I wonder how much higher value gift would impact even owners or principles of business.

Any thoughts or concerns regarding the common practice of large manufacturers "paying" for security consultants to attend specially designed conferences at high end resorts. By attending these does the consultant lessen their commitment to the end customer by feeling obligated to specify that brand and not what may be the best solution? Does the end customer know that this is happening? Do they care?

In my mind the consultant should pay his own freight as part of the cost of doing business necessary to inform himself as to the state of the art of available products and services that he may choose to specify in designs for his clients. As soon as the consultant accepts trips, accommodations, dinners, etc by the manufacturers they have compromised themselves.

Who are these dinners really for?

I've heard many salespeople talk about the clients they wine and dine, and it is crystal clear to me that the salespeople are doing this as a way to very eat well for no money.
