Open Area People Counter?

Hi! Does anyone know if there is a system that can count people visiting a swimming beach during a day? I know that there is several people counter solutions available, but they are for corridor or a street.

Are there any solutions available for open areas like swimming beach or outdoor marketplace? Bonus option would be if counter could count adults and kids specifically. Of course, a solution like this would be much more inaccurate than normal people counter.

Mikko, good question. It's an interesting application.

Before looking at an 'open area', let me ask: Is there any way to position cameras at the walkways on to the beach? Related, are there such walkways? e.g.:

Beaches can really big. I am struggling to see how it would be feasible covering such large areas without an incredible cost and still accuracy issues.

1) what kind of camera will be used in terms of FPS/Resolution etc?

2) Are you trying to track people moving in specific pathway/direction?

3) Any sample video that can be looked into to understand the area as question is too broad?

I saw this demonstrated at the MIPS event a couple weeks ago.  Canon was the presenter.

The demo showed an analytics app that was looking at an area overview and had the ability to count all the people in the scene...on the fly.

Here is a video about it.

Walkways to beach would be an option, but that would require lots of network/power infrastructure building.

People counter on solution like this, don’t need to be very accurate. Basic idea is to compare results with previous days / months / years.

I was thinking about Axis Q6000. That to one single point on beach and then software counting people visiting on view area(s). Of course, that would require quite advanced algorithms from counter software, to give any reasonable results.

That to one single point on beach

If you are just going to do one single point, why not just do one walkway?

I see your point about using a single point to compare relative traffic over time. But since either way (looking at one area of the beach or one walkway) is not going to give a total beach count, the benefit of one people counting camera on one walkway is that it will be far easier to do and more reliable. Then, you can use the results for that walkway as a solid proxy for overall traffic flows over time.

In this specific case, I already have network connections at beach. Walkways have none. Anyhow, walkways seems to be right place for counting people, at least for now.

Open area people counter would require some serious AI, which could identify people, so they wouldn’t be counted twice.

Thanks for yor help!

Counting people isnt a problem but what do you mean by view areas? does it mean you want to track counts at multiple areas within a single view of camera?

Take a look at Axis Q6000-E

With that kind of camera, you could have very large area covered with single camera installation. Anyhow i have no idea is it possible to use Q6000 with people counter software available.

If they charge for parking at that beach then average your visitors based on the % that drive and the number of visitors per vehicle.

This could be The Solution: BriefCam

Mikko, see Briefcam Video Synopsis Examined

There's definitely positives for Briefcam but it's meant to do investigations and querying of video, like show me all the people wearing red at the beach or black cars heading into the parking lot, whereas what you have described so far is simpler / less expensive people counting need.
