What are your recommendations for vehicle dash cams and in car cams.  These would not be for LEOs so looking for something that balances quality with cost.  Thanks!

Hello Jon:

This is a good question!  Cost is an interesting variable here, as we recently reviewed Owl Car Cam Tested - Disappoints, which is at the high end  at ~$350.

We also tested the ~$50 Yi (Yi Smart Dashcam Tested) and it didn't do badly as just a camera - the more advanced features like 'lane departure' did not work well.

Hope that helps, I look forward to the feedback too!

Hey Jon, what sort of featureset are you looking for? Do they need live streaming? Automatic offload of video? Just simple recording to a local SD? The options vary depending on these questions and we may be able to narrow it down.

Really open right now. Wi-fi access would be nice.  I was thinking in car NVR with in cab can and forward facing cam.  I don’t want to offer something the client could buy on the web themselves, but if we somehow did custom config I could justify upcharging on something like the Yi, but I was really thinking something that could be in the $1,000 to $1,500 installed price point to the customer.  So would need to carve out $400 to $500 of that for labor.

If you want to do a custom job, offer front and back cameras recording to a secure box in the cabin.  Anything less and you are competing with DIY and car alarm installers.

I like my ROAV C1 dashcam, got it in a bundle on Amazon.  Really easy to install and use, has gps, gyro, audio rec, and wifi/app controls after setup.  Removable mini sd card.

Have you guys reviewed any of the mirror cam systems like the one Yi has?

YI Mirror Dash Cam, Dual Dashboard Camera Recorder with Touch Screen, Front Rear View HD Camera, G Sensor, Reverse Monitor, Loop Recording

For real mirrors, common specs are 7" touch screen, 720p dual cams with IR, >130 degree view/angle,  Montion impact, Speeding warnning, GSP, Parking asst, sd card slot, wifi/bluetooth pair with cell phone etc....

In OEM space, Yi is not among top5.  Check out JADO.

Only problem for you is that they ARE on the web.
