Issue With Vario Illuminators Connected To Antaira Industrial Poe+ Switches - Help?

I know this topic is 2 years old but I'm curious if anyone is using the Vario lights and having issues with PoE+ from the switch to the lights.  I have a fairly large installation and am connecting the Vario lights to Antaira industrial PoE+ switches that are rated for 30W & 48V per port. A lot of the lights seem to be failing, but what I think is happening is a problem with the communication between the devices, as if the switch is not properly detecting the light and in turn not sending the correct power.  Plugging the light into a traditional 35W PoE+ injector seems to work well.

I had a similar issues about a year ago with a certain camera not communicating correctly with an HP switch about the type of PoE device it was, so no power was sent.

Have you tested them with another PoE switch?

I have seen this failure with cameras where they will no longer work with a PoE switch but power up fine with an injector. When you use an injector a different set of wires is powered (PoE mode A/B), which in turn uses a different set of diodes in the PoE circuitry of the device. These diodes can often get fried by surges but the other mode circuitry (and the rest of the device) is fine.

If the above applies you might find that grounding your switches, using shielded cable and/or surge protection will stop your devices getting fried.

Thanks, I have a tech going to the client site tomorrow, he'll be armed with extra switches and injectors to see if there's a pattern for the ones that have failed versus the ones that are still working.  I have not laid eyes on the equipment, but am told everything is properly grounded.  This is part if the site inspection tomorrow.

Do you have the Raytec remote control to test them while they are plugged into the switch? Are you using the lamps with a NIC card so you can communicate to them or just PoE powered lamps?

The model we are using is the VAR2-IPPOE-w4-1 Medium Range White-Light Network Illuminator, I don't think this model offers an optional remote control. That's a great feature, will definitely look into that for my next project.

How many Vario lights per switch? Example: 48port PoE+ with 750W power supply should only be loaded with >24 PDs at 30w consumption. Turn off all the other ports, if PoE is auto on a non PoE port, turn it off. What brand you are using, post your problem in their forums. Also look for errors in the syslog.

Question, if you have 1 switch and 1 Vario do you still have the same error? What else is on the switch and is the port power set to auto?

Good luck!

Thanks, we are using Antaira LMP-1202G-SFP switches, with 8 PoE+ ports rated at 30W per port.  We are not exceeding that capacity of the switch, and the switch has a 240W 48-55V power supply. Each switch has no more than 4 lights attached.

Yes - 1 switch/1 light will exhibit same symptoms.  Ports are set to auto but will be experimenting with other settings.

Today's goal is to assure all the lights and switches are at the latest firmware.
