Is Amazon Putting Rekognition In Ring?

Interesting ACLU post about an Amazon patent regarding face rec in doorbells.

The working range on video doorbells is pretty limited, in most suburban areas this would likely only really work on people that approached your door. In some denser cities though it might effectively be able to scan people walking down the street.

I think it's realistic to assume that they will probably sell a Face Rec service as part of ring to identify who's at your door. I can see it being less bandwidth intensive if you just add a white list too. Would allow a visitor to open the door based off just Face Rec (potentially).

In general, Amazon is well aware of the value / power of connecting their cloud services to their IoT devices, e.g., Amazon Touts Home Security Market Disruption

I don't what they are planning to do specifically with Ring but I would expect general integration over the next few years as an important differentiator.

Smile and wave at your pricavy!

Why would you share all that with anyone's doorbell. I'm hopefull it won't pass GDPR and does not become a service that is active in our streets.

I like the rekognition service you can add to you smart mirror (nifty little DIY project).
A usage like that leaves you in control, the mirror will ad content based on who is recognized and how he or she looks. That should never be part of street cams that can capture anyone.
