Best Camera For Face Recognition?

We are working more and more with face recognition in our VMS platform and we are searching for the best camera to do this. We are working with GeoVision or Uniview camera’s mostly but this quality is not always enough. Especialy when we are looking at an enterance with a lot sunlight coming in.

I think this is the most important:

Good WDR

High FPS (60)

Vari focal lens up to 22mm

We are checking Axis and Hawha X series but what do you think are the best camera’s to do this?

Thanks

Do you need a global shutter? I've often heard this requirement from FR vendors but i'm pretty sure any well tuned light sensitive camera could work just as well.

I would look to a 'Forensic WDR' model from AXIS as a benchmark as it is their latest tech, like the Q1645 for example.

Frederick, thanks for asking.

One note, I changed the title from 'Best Face Recognition Camera' to 'Best Camera For Face Recognition' to make it clearer that you don't need / want the camera to do face recognition itself, but that you want best image quality to feed into a facial recognition system.

Wisenet X is strong in WDR - Hanwha Wisenet X Tested

Axis Q3517 is strong in WDR - Axis 'Best' Q3517-LVE 5MP Camera Tested

Question - are you / your facial recognition system using more than 30fps for analysis / recognition? Also, have you noticed performance problems with sunlight coming in? I assume so given your question but I'd be interested to hear more about what issues you have seen.

While I can't speak with first hand knowledge, in conversation with one facial recognition vendor they mentioned Panasonic as a recommended brand. Not sure which models, they were demoing their product with a 60fps Pana bullet camera (which had really good WDR in a casual demo).

Hi John,

We do see some problems in our own showroom with Uniview camera’s because it’s all glass. We have a lot settings that can be adjusted but we have a GeoVision camera at the same place and without any settings we get more accuracy and better pictures.

We have had great success with 2 models, on the lens, it depends on the distance of the person.

- IP 8166 * camera with excellent cost and has met expectations very well in controlled environments *

- IP 816A-HP * camera with EIS, P-IRIS, 60Fps..etcetc..for more complex environments * I think this camera should meet your need for what you asked for. I assure you, you can go with it without hesitation, it already comes with a lens P-iris 3.6 to 17 mm .... or you can order a P-iris of 5 to 50 mm where the cost is the same, just ask the camera to come with this lens ..
We had no problem with these 2 models (we are using Cognitec and ISS)

Starting to see more utilization of the P1367 with optical lenses as high as 80mm for facial recognition testing and applications.
