Video Surveillance Installation Winter 2020 Overview
This is a unique installation course in a market where little practical training is available. We teach you, step by step, the right way to install, the right tools to use and how to overcome the key challenges you will face installing.
What the IPVM Video Surveillance Installation Course Covers
In 12 sessions we cover the basics for installing video surveillance systems:
(1) Tools / Safety
The course starts with an introduction to basic installer's hand tools and how they are best used in installation. We also examine installer workplace safety guidelines and personal protective equipment.
(2) Tools Advanced
Expands to cover specialty tools used, including cable termination tools, ladder, lifts, and test tools for checking cabled work.
(3) Cables
Explains the process and techniques for installing the cable types in locations most used for video surveillance systems.
(4) Terminating
Breaks down best practices attaching cabling connector ends for video networks, including copper ethernet, coaxial systems, and fiber optic cabling.
(5) Indoor Camera Installation, Part 1
Shows actual indoor-camera installation in common interior areas like drywall, ceiling tiles, and block walls, along with proper Firestopping and Riser penetrations.
(6) Indoor Camera Installation, Part 2
Continues actual camera installation in common interior areas like exposed ceilings, trussworks/drop pendant, masonry walls, and plenum-rated ceilings.
(7) Outdoor Camera Installation, Part 1
Shows actual outdoor camera installation in common exterior areas like brick, metal siding, and synthetic stucco (EIFS), along with waterproofing and sealing all work.
(8) Outdoor Camera Installation, Part 2
Continues actual camera installation in common exterior areas like roofs, parapet mounts, tripods, poles, and proper lightning protection & grounding.
(9) Whips & Mounting Features
Breaks down the use and tradeoffs of how options like camera cable whips, gimbal mounts, and backplate mounting impacts installation and video quality.
(10) Install Factors
Survey the best and worst installation features of cameras, and review how popular models install compared to each other.
(11) Aiming & Focusing Cameras
Explains the steps and techniques of optimizing camera positioning and lens focus for production use.
(12) System Commissioning
To cap off the course, IPVM covers work documentation, checklists for finishing the job, and how to wrap up the job cleanly.
Who Should and Should NOT Take this Course
If you are looking for instruction on how to design and specify cameras and networking equipment, you should not take this course. The better classes for you are our Camera course and IP Networking courses.
This video installation course is for those want to learn the basics of installer work with limited prior training on video surveillance cameras and equipment, and limited experience with networks.
Course Instructor
The course will be lead by John Scanlan from IPVM. In addition to heading up several training 
courses, John is an integral contributor to video coverage and testing. Before coming to IPVM, John worked as a FE for several retailers & banks, owned a small business dealing communications equipment to hedge funds, and before that was a regional IT Manager.
John will lead each session, with others from IPVM moderating questions and providing feedback on related IPVM research and testing.

The Camera Installation course will meet live online, starting January 21st for 12 times over 6 weeks (Tuesday and Thursday) at 5pm ET - 6pm ET.

Certification
At the end of classes, you will take a comprehensive final exam including multiple choice and essay questions. If you pass, you will become IPMVU Video Surveillance Installation certified (see list of IPVM Certified Professionals).
