If you thought that managers of security installers were white, middle aged and Sarah Palin supporters, than you are right according to a recent survey by SSI magainze [link no longer available] on US security installers. It is important to note that SSI magazine's core readership tends to be disproportionately in the alarm/intrusion side of the business so the numbers are unlikely to be representative for IP video surveillance integrators. Nontheless, the numbers provide insight into the 'traditional' business.

Their 2008 results [link no longer available] provide extensive details on security installer managers. Key points include:

  • 92% are male
  • 91% are white
  • 50% did not graduate from college
  • 61% Republicans
  • 61% have been in the industry 16 years or longer
  • Only 8% require technical training of employees
  • 73% of businesses are family owned
