Abandoning Wireless for Fiber?

By John Honovich, Published Aug 16, 2009, 12:00am EDT

Two recent examples of cities - one in the US, one in the Africa with complaints about wireless video surveillance performance. Philadelphia switched from wireless to fiber [link no longer available]and a South African city complained about their wireless performance.

While complaints about wireless performance (reliability, total throughput) are common, I am quite surprised about the switch to fiber in Philadelphia. Despite the challenges for wireless, the capital cost savings can be so significant that many (most?) cities are willing to deal with the shortcomings and challenges of wireless.
