School shootings aren't the only disturbingly common occurrence terrorizing students, teachers, and parents. School shooting hoaxes are frightening, too, and they happen much more frequently.

More than 500 schools in the US have been subject in the past year to coordinated campaigns of "swatting," or situations where callers report nonexistent threats in order to trigger aggressive police responses, the Washington Post reported recently.
