I have to order a SFP transceiver to work with a PoE switch (each from different manufacturers). When I look at the datasheet for the transceiver , it states that it's designed to plug into their own PoE switch. Does this mean it would only work with their switch or could I use to plug into another manufacturer's switch?
SFP Transceiver Compatibility With PoE Switch
Generally SFPs are compatible with other manufacturers. I’ve bought multiple types from various brands and never had issues on switches.
That being said, I could believe it’s possible it’s proprietary somehow.
Can you share a link to the SFP and switch?
Thank you for the help Ethan! This is very good to know...Here is a link for both:

Is there any reason not to use the Allied SFP? They have a selector here: http://www.alliedtelesis.com/products/selector/transceivermodules
The Allied SFP has a 1 week lead time from Anixter and we were looking to get something sooner (the SFP was originally missed in our spec).
This selector is helpful. Thanks again.
If you are using two different manufactures switches say Cisco and HP. You would order a Cisco SFP for the Cisco switch and an HP SFP for the HP switch. Long as you order the same type of SPF for each respective switch you will be good to go.
Hi Michael. Thank you for the info. Is there any reason why these would be proprietary? I guess I just don't understand why you wouldn't be able to mix and match from different manufacturers.
Some manufacturers are pickier than others when it comes to SPF compatibility. If you don't want to take any chances use the branded version of the manufactures switch you are using on each end.
