Residential Smoke Alarms

My local AHJ wont' allow for monitored smokes in lieu of 120v smoke detectors for new construction.  Historically we've either gone in post construction and retrofitted, or put a small number of monitored smokes in to supplement the 120v units.  One of my salesmen mentioned that his old company worked with an alarm contractor that would use a relay on the 120v detectors to connect to the alarm panel and monitor them that way.  This would be ideal, because it would remove a fairly common headache as well as dispose of several hours of wasted time that always seems to be necessary to explain to clients why they have to double pay for smokes.  Has anyone done this?  A quick search turned up a couple different modules, such as the Kiddie SM120X.  I was going to test on my house, but it was built in 1990 and doesn't have interconnected smokes.  Any assistance would be appreciated.
