Replacing Aged Hard Drives, When And How?

End user here. I've been tasked with creating a 5 year road map to replace old security equipment.

 

My thought for the 'biggest' thing is my NVR, which is an S2 NetVR750 with 128TB of storage in a RAID.  It's 3 years old, which doesn't seem like a long time until you look at HDD fail rates. (we've been fine so far).

 

Couple of related questions:  

First, from the big picture, does anyone out there have customers that  preemptively replace VMS HDDs every so often? If so, how long between? 3 years?  Or, do they just wait for them to die and hope for the best?

 

Second, more specifically, should I replace the hard drives, or the entire box? This is a completely loaded question since we all know how rapidly technology changes. Again, this is looking 3 years out so who knows what sort of mergers or new products would be out.  But, assuming it happened today and money wasn't an issue, is there any real point in replacing the actual server, or just the hard drives?
