Looking For A PTZ To Track From Dumpster To Apartment Unit

We have a client who has a lot of issues with residents leaving garbage outside of the dumpster. They would like to install cameras to cover all of the dumpsters, and have cameras that cover which unit they go to. The units are all townhomes, and the doors are on the driveway so we do not have to worry about hallways, etc.

Is there a reliable way to have a PTZ cover the dumpster, then track the individual back to their unit, and once they go inside, have the camera return to the dumpster? There would be no criteria on whether garbage was left, I would just track everyone. My first thought is what if person B leaves garbage while the camera is off scene following person A?

Thoughts?

Are PTZ's the only way to get the coverage needed? It seems like it would be easy to locate the time when the garbage showed up, and track the person who left it by hand. Using analytics like object-left-behind and object tracking seems like overkill.

If PTZ's are the only way to get the necessary coverage, perhaps put the cameras on patrol?

Bosch with their new analytics and the newer PTZ's could most likely accomplish this. You can setup rules to track a person, car, truck or bike. Of course there would have to be a good line of site from dumpster to door.

I originally was thinking multiple fixed cameras but I was thinking it may be nice to have the camera zoom in and see exactly where they go. With a fixed camera and multiple doors down the side of the sidewalk, at a certain distance, it may be tough to see which door they go in. But its probably cheaper to just add another VF camera and zoom on that section.

I would personally go with multiple fixed cameras. PTZs are nice when they work, but how would you handle multiple targets in this scenario?

That is my biggest concern.

But I figured I would ask and see if anyone had any ideas.

The Illustra Pro PTZ has a feature called Intelligent Guard Tour.  You set up a normal guard tour, maybe to visit each dumpster.  At any set point if any motion is detected the PTZ will zoom in on it and track it for a configurable amount of time.  After that expires it will return to the guard tour.  When there are multiple targets it will zoom out to capture them all.  Its not perfect but it was designed for this type of situation -- to get a decent forensic recording without getting helplessly distracted.

Yes you can set up a PTZ to track activity at a dumpster and follow the person.  Once the motion is gone the PTZ will return to the dumpster as a preset zone.  Yes there is always the chance of another person at the dumpster while the PTZ is tracking the first incident
