Where Are The Pre/Post Motion Settings On Milestone?

The Milestone 2018 Admin manual mentions the ability to define a Pre/Post for Motion Recording.  I cant seem to find where you set the Pre/Post setting.  The manual also mentions the ability to create camera setting templates that can be applied to multiple cameras simultaneously in the Management Client.  Can anyone provide some details on this.  The manual is mostly text and little to no screenshots, which makes it hard to follow.  I am running 2018 R1 Corporate.

Go to the Rules on the site navigation selection (left side). Then there should be a "Default Record on Motion Rule" if not, create one.

Perform an action on "Motion Started"

       from "All Cameras"

start recording "5 seconds before" on "the device on which event occurred"

     from "All cameras"

stop recording "3 seconds after"

everything in quotes is variables and this is how I have my system setup currently.

Hi UM1,

The pre/post settings are configured in the Rules engine (for the most part).  There is first a setting on the "Record" tab for each camera called "Pre-buffer".  It looks like this:

The first part tells it whether to do the pre-buffer in Memory or on Disk.  As long as your pre-buffer is less than 15 seconds, I would strongly recommend doing it in memory.  The second setting is the amount of pre-buffer.  Think of this as a global setting for that camera.  So, you could set this to the maximum you would want and then when you create the rules, you would indicate how much of the pre-buffer you want to save.  For example, if you wanted to save 3 seconds of pre-buffer on motion but you wanted to save 10 seconds of pre-buffer on some other event, then you would set this value to 10 seconds.

This value can also be set on Camera groups instead of just setting it on a camera by camera basis.  That will speed things up.

The second part is creating the Rule.  By default, there is a Rule called "Default Record on Motion Rule" and it looks like this:

That Rule is saying when the Motion Started event is triggered from any camera, start recording 3 seconds before (this is grabbing 3 seconds of the pre-buffer) and then when the Motion Stopped event is triggered, stop recording 3 seconds afterwards (this is your post-buffer).

If you just want to adjust the pre/post on motion, then you can just edit this Rule.  If you are trying to record on some other event, you can create a Rule to do that and when you select the "Start recording" action, you will be given the options to configure your pre/post settings for that particular Rule.

The templates you are referring to are bulk settings that can be done on Camera groups.  If you add multiple cameras to a group and then select the group, the Settings tab will show you all of the settings that are available across all of the cameras in the group.  As a simplified example, if you added two cameras and one was capable of up to 1080p resolution, h.264 and MJPEG, and 5, 10, 15, and 30fps and the other was capable of 720p resolution, h.264 and MJPEG, and 5, 10, 15, and 30fps, when you select the group you would be able to change the codec and the frame rate across the group (because they have the exact same options) but you wouldn't be able to bulk change the resolution because they don't have the same options available.

When I'm setting up a system, I will typically create groups for the different camera models and then do a quick bulk config (assuming they will have all of the same settings) and then delete the group afterwards.

Looks like the question has already been answered, but I wanted to test out my new mic anyway. Here's a quick video showing the pre/post settings and how to change them.

Don't get me wrong I like and sell Milestone but sometimes you guys make things way to complicated. Too many tabs and steps IMO.

Fair, but it also allows all the flexibility you could think of - different pre- and post- buffers for different cameras, even different pre- and post- buffers for the same camera under different situations (e.g., normal three second pre-buffer for motion detection, but a ten second pre-buffer if an analytics loitering trigger hits at night)
