Mixing Pairs Of Coax To Ethernet Converters - The Dreaded Elevator Camera

I've picked up a client with existing elevator cameras, and I believe the coax to ethernet converters are going bad.  If feasible, I'd like to try replacing the one converter that I can get to...but am worried that mixing converters (the existing ones are discontinued I'm told) might not work.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I'd assume it would work (just a signal/power conversion)....but I don't want to potentially ruin what is (somewhat) working.  Furthermore, I'd really rather not pay $350 an hour + travel time for the elevator contractor, just to replace the one above the cab.

Typically brands won't mix as they have their own means of getting that signal across the coax. I would find out if they have a replacement model that would work.

Might be worthwhile looking at seeing if you can put the converter inside the cab, versus on top of it. At least that way you can service it in the future. If you end up needing to replace the whole thing, that is.

Might be cheaper in the long run to have the elevator tech and you out one time to replace both ends. And while you are at it upgrade the camera. It's going to be expensive no doubt but this way the customer gets years of service and doesn't have to worry about it.

Alternatively if they have you out a couple of time and then have the elevator tech it will start to add up to a lot. Plus you have to factor in the frustration.

I have used that approach a lot and most customers go for it.

Forget the whole travel cable path, install a camera with an SD card, pick-up a TP Link travel router for <20 bucks, plug in above the cab. Explain to customer that all is being recorded on SD card and walk near elevator with Laptop, connect to the TP Link router and wa-la you are retrieving recorded video and NO hassles with elevator cables or converters....

In most situations, this is not going to work well, especially if the building has a concierge. They want this integrated into the VMS.

It's my understanding SD cards are not designed for this purpose and they will fail and you will not know until it's too late.
