Metrasens - Large, Mass Casualty Threat Detection Technology

With everything going on with schools and guns am just looking to see what tools are available to detect weapons which could be used in schools. Something that could detect if a person had a weapon before entering the building. I found this product when looking around the web. If it works it looks like it could be something used in schools to detect if weapons are present. From what I have found these are all weather units which are portable or permanent and run on battery or hardwired power. Thoughts? Feedback?

Michael, thanks for sharing this. I am not familiar with Metrasens.

In reviewing their website, I am trying to figure out which of their products is most suitable for weapons detection.

This looks really interesting.  Thank you for sharing.  I just reached out to them to see if they have any VMS integrations.

The traditional issue with metal detectors is armed guards are needed to do secondary screenings when the detector goes off. A very slow and expensive process. Imagine what happens when the unarmed guard detects a gun...

How do you see this type of technology being used in a school environment?

If detection was extremely reliable then the detector could output to trigger a lockdown and make a school-wide PA announcement, but that isn't all that helpful when the Police SRO walks in and his firearm sets it off.

What I found interesting with this units is they are all weather and can be used outside.  Also can build in into a wall so they could be hidden around the school maybe even build them into school bus doors.  My ideal solution would be able to detect guns before they get into the building.

I have not tested this so I don't know if their marketing videos are overhyped.

Isn't Wynn's hotel using something like that? (according to him)

I think these types of products are a HUGE growth area for schools, if they don't cost TSA-airport kind of money.

I agree which is why I am looking around to see if any options are available.

I watched the entire video and the only technical explanation given for how the Metrasens detects cell phones is that it is a 'full body scanner' - and it shows what appears to be an x-ray showing a cell phone located on a body as it mentions the use of same.

So is it an x-ray machine?  If so, radiation would be a concern.  Especially within a school.

If it's not an x-ray machine, then what is it 'scanning' full bodies with?

The video makes numerous statements about how the Metrasens is not fooled by 'other metal things'.  So is it a metal detector?

Is it the technology used in Total Recall?

what is it?

what is it?

This tired meme gets so much use on IPVM when it comes to new technology marketing.

After looking at their site, it appears as if they are using sensors that detect magnetic resonances from materials within it's scan zone.

From their website's ProScreen 900 At A Glance graphic (half way down the page):

"Specific large weapon screeningFirst layer of defense intended to only detect large ferromagnetic signatures."

Ferromagnetism

So... not exactly a metal detector and not at all an x-ray. But it scans for objects that exhibit magnetic tendencies - which we all know that metal things do.

I would image that it's use is at least similar to how MRI's work....

I am bumping it since this category is now getting a lot more attention with Evolv's funding / marketing.

There Sales Director for Corrections have recently joined us to help us expand drone detection into corrections. What I understood from him is that it scans objects with magatic charactistics like cell phones, guns. He explained that it is not as good as an xray. It can't find drugs, organic items but it works better then a metal detector and it's portable for random checks. Cost is about 2x a metal detector but 12x less than a full body xray machine. Hope this helps.
