There are so many units out there!

One model we use that is well suited for surveillance projects is:

Extech (FLIR) LT300

The resolution for measurements is 0.01 lux, which is useful for low light applications, and is lower than some photography-tailored meters can measure.

It runs ~$110 USD online:

I recently spent some time looking at meters and the LT300 is one of the only models that has high enough resolution (number of decimal places) for low light surveillance. It goes to hundredths of 1 lux (0.01lx), while others only go to tenths.

You'll have many more options if you look at meters that only go to 0.1lx, and many scenes are not going to be lower than that, but I recommend using something that goes lower until you get a feel for it.

It goes to hundredths of 1 lux (0.01lx), while others only go to tenths.

And yet some cameras costing less than the meter claim to go thousands of 1 lux, 0.001lx and beyond, and not only detect light but render an image as well.  Truly amazing! :(
