Hi all ,

I worked in company for the past 3 years , but as the company was small,  I did not get opportunity to work on different products in detail .I worked on access control but everything was standalone system ..So ,as i see that the security systems is a vast field involving mostly IP technology . I want suggestion from the experienced people on how to move . I am mostly interested to work on those systems that can give me the opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

Now ,I feel like i had wasted my 3 years.

Need suggestions

A few of questions to start:

  • Are you willing to move geographically, and/or professionally into a different type of role?
  • Did you build any relationships with partner companies (electronic locking hardware, door operators, etc) or channel partners that you could reach out to for opportunities?
  • Do you have real-world contacts on LinkedIn you could communicate with, or interact with their posts to get noticed?
  • Do you have any industry applicable certifications or significant experience you can highlight when reaching out to someone?

If you were at a systems integrator, no hardware/software system itself is going to bring you to opportunities to stand out. Moving to a larger/global integrator could bring you more opportunities, but then you will just be farther down the experience ladder and have to work 3 more years to get to where you are with a smaller company.

Moving to a different manufacturer is an option, but you don't want to become "that person" who jumps around different manufacturers every few years. Unless you're the person that is so valuable you get stolen by another manufacturer every few years.

However, if you believe that you know everything about the standalone systems your company offered, find another larger manufacturer that competes with your company, but also offers products up-market from your company, and reach out to them. If you are strong it one area, play up that strength, be aware of what your weaknesses are, and address them with training or personal research.
