which is better both from technology and price

We have had really good luck with Seneca over the last few years.  In the last year they have quit doing the custom builds and are doing more Dell OEMs, which hurts if you need small rack mount servers under 10TB.  Top notch sales support, they once spec'd an under powered server and upgraded it at no cost after verifying the settings where as we described.  I know there is at least one Seneca person on the forum that will probably chime in if he sees this.

Technology = 3D & Flash Array

Price = You have to wait for the movie to come out.

As far as flash array I know some vms like to write on 64kb however flash does not go up that high. Anyone ever have any problems with using low kb formatted luns?

Milestone Systems

I can't speak for other VMS but with regard to Milestone products, "it depends".

Every storage vendor, and raid controller varies. And the performance is going to depend largely on their technology and how it is configured, how many drives are in the array, etc. We have a Seagate rep here that I would love to correct me and fill in any gaps, as storage isn't my primary focus so I may be misinformed to some degree.

I don't recall seeing an NTFS partition that I could not format with 64KB allocation unit size. But this is often mixed up with the RAID block size which some controllers limit to 512 bytes for example. One determine the bytes per allocation for writing files, and for larger files that means fewer allocations overall. The other determines how many "chunks" a write operation might be split into. If you write 2 KB to disk with a 512 byte block size, the raid might split that into 4 operations, possibly each on a different disk in the array, though the firmware probably uses a more complicated algorithm to detemdete which writes go to which disks to maximize performance.

We recommend the 64 KB allocation unit size, and typically a block size of 512 or higher if I recall correctly. But differences in the raid block size value are probably going to yield different results depending on the storage solution and the number of disks, raid type, etc.

I do not have positive experiences regarding Seneca.  Price was acceptable but the cost was far greater long term.  I have a dozen or so rack mount workstations where the SSD fails on their 1 year anniversary, almost to the day.  For a 3 month period I could count on replacing 2-3 a month.  Seneca have offered to have me send the original SSD back and Seneca would ship out replacements with the OS on them.  However, the client site would then be out of commission for the transit time and I would need to revisit the site to rebuild everything else.  I have purchased many custom Seneca builds and find they tend to use the lowest end components possible - gamer class mobos and such.  I feel as though the Newegg "bundle of the day" may be a better value.

No experience with Rasilient at all.

I much prefer BCD or honestly, anyone, who offers the Dell/HP next-business day replacement policy.  What little savings there may be up front selecting a third party is more than covered by the cost of replacements unless technician labor is valued at $10/hr.

UI3,

Were these rackmount workstation used for viewing, or were they storage servers? Was it a specific brand or model of SSD that they were using that were failing?

You weren't writing video, or anything "out-of-specification" I'm guessing, or they probably wouldn't continue sending you replacements.

Once you replaced the original SSD, were the new ones failing again after a year?

2U rackmount used solely for viewing 3-4 cameras.  They absolutely had the same brand/model/size of SSD.  However, enough time has passed that I do not recall the details.

Correct.

We never replaced.  We exceeded our willingness to have technicians go out and fix workstations.  If I had utilized a brand such as HP or Dell (both available through BCD) with their next business day replacement warranty they would have sent their various contracted technicians out to do the replacement themselves.  Tremendous value in that.

Rasilient has been solid for us. We have plugged in our blades, storage, workstations, and analytics box and it has just worked. Super happy with it and the customized solution it provides. All SSDs in everything with the exception of storage. It has been reliable.
