Hundreds of inmates at Southern Regional Jail in WV have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, alleging inhumane living conditions.
According to NBC News affiliate WVVA, recent court filings revealed that inmates claimed to have witnessed jail staff destroying documents in March 2023, despite an order to preserve evidence. Plaintiffs' attorneys requested surveillance footage covering the time period mentioned by the inmates but discovered missing video from March 17 and March 30, 2023 (it's not 18.5 minutes, but Interim Supt. John Frame, who WVVA said previously testified that all the jail's shredders were brought to his office on the 17th, reminded me of a low-rent Nixon). The state's attorney attributed the missing video to an automatic system that overwrites itself every 14 days, however, the plaintiff's attorneys confirmed that the footage immediately before and after the gaps was turned over.
