"He explained to us that he can get $20 a camera on the streets and he can get it like that--two cameras is $40 and you can do a lot with $40 if you're living on the streets whether it be drugs," said Dinnell.

“...and he can get it like that--two cameras is $40”

“and that’s before we start talkin’ VMS integration and 24/7 Support”

play the scenario forward....

where are these 'street' cameras going, once parlayed for crack rocks?

i.e. who would want a bunch of these?

One possibility is the entity installing these cameras in the first place.... as in, the victim could theoretically be sold the very same cameras to replace those that were stolen.

BOOM - your head just exploded.

BOOM...

It wouldn’t be the first time.  A pro bass player friend of mind had his $2000 amp stolen from a locked u-haul via cable cutters, when he was on the road.  He was just thankful that he took his $5000 custom bass to his hotel room that night.

Because he was a working musician, he started looking for a replacement and saw a similar model, though fairly well used on eBay. He was suspicious right off the bat that it was his, but because it was for only $500 and he was in a bind, he bought it, thinking if it was his he would contact the authorities.

When it came, although his name was scratched out of the cabinet, he was sure it was his.  He was pretty pissed, but before he even contacted anyone about, the band told him a check for $2000 was forthcoming from the insurance company.

Which made him feel like a criminal, for a second or two, before he said “I knew I should have left my bass in the u-haul!”

$20 for a surveillance camera? Seems like a lot of money compared to the spam emails

An arbitrage opportunity for drug addicts. Buy surveillance cameras for $12 each, resell them on the street for $20...

Hmmm....

Is any particular company soliciting these companies shortly after the cameras are stolen?
