Harshly Unpleasant Audio On IPVM Videos

As a home enthusiast non-pro, I find your website invaluable.  I wish I had discovered it and subscribed earlier.  I'm now selling on Ebay some of the gear I bought before I subscribed to IPVM.

I do have one suggestion/question:  Why the extremely annoying very loud explosions at the beginning and end of most of your videos?  I find myself adjusting the volume to avoid the shock and also hurrying to press PAUSE before the ending explosion.  Getting your logo out there is fine, and the graphics are nicely done, but the harshly unpleasant audio completely ruins the effect and probably at times discourages subscribers from pushing PLAY buttons unless strongly motivated.

Consider using an intrinsically safe browser.

#1, thanks for the feedback, sorry about that.

In the past year or two, we have eliminated the intro video clip and generally only do the outro one. Older videos do have it once in the beginning and once at the end.

That said, I've asked our video producer to change the clip to lower volume / intensity. Thanks.

I’d like to apologize for my first response u1, I mistook your post as being tongue in cheek and responded likewise.  I hereby endeavor to do better.

Why the extremely annoying very loud explosions at the beginning and end of most of your videos?

Question, are you sure it’s the loudness that is annoying you, or perhaps could it be the abruptness (attack) of the sound or some other psycho-acoustic phenomenon?

Consider this video, chosen at random, the time-honored Setting IP Addresses on IP Cameras:

Here’s the first minute or so of audio wave extracted from the video:

In this video at least, the intensity of the “Spoken voice” audio is greater, by several dB, than that of the “Explosion”.  Of course this is just a sound pressure graph, and there are many factors which influence our perception of loudness.

Perhaps you could listen to this video and agree/disagree that it is representative of those which you find the loudness jarring.

Mr Honovich, thanks for your response and action.

Hello u2,

Thanks for your detailed and colorful reply.  To my ear the example video you looked at has an almost pleasant explosion followed by an overly loud vocal part that would still cause me to turn the volume down -- just the opposite of what I've observed many times on IPVM videos.  The video that finally prompted my initial comment yesterday was in the review of the Hikvision door station KB8112 ("8112" in the search box brings it right up).

I don't know a thing about psycho-acousitics.  I do recall reading about psychohistory, and I'm sure Harry Seldon would consider many of the explosions too loud.  Based on his principles of psychohistory, he would likely predict that sooner or later some nut case would complain about the explosions.

So maybe just plain psycho.

Best regards,

u1
