Do You Power Locks Directly From Door Controllers?

In the Access 101 class held this week, we had several discussions on the pros/cons of powering locks directly off controllers, where the output relay contacts actually pass-thru some power for items like strikes.

An example where IPVM used this is our Axis 'Powered by Genetec' Test that uses a red LED to simulate a door lock powered directly from the Axis A1610 controller. If you are interested, see the red/black LED power wires on the orange output relay contacts? The LED is being lit directly from the controller.
