I know someone who works in retail Loss Prevention. They recently told me that a newer type of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) in stores that are 'going off' / alarming even when nothing has been stolen.

The method this particular system works is there are two pedestals adjacent to an entrance/egress point, and when someone walks through them the coils energize a small RF chip in the product. If not removed by a cashier, the RF chip/tag is still buried or part of the product, and the alarm signals it may be stolen. Here is a transparent pedestal to help illustrate this:
