I have a customer that operates day cruise / tour boats (like whale watching boats, glass bottom boats). Anyway they want cameras around and in the boats. I'm not overly concerned around camera selection, or housings, I'm not worried about corrosive salt water screwing things up. I am mainly concerned about the DVR/NVR system. I need a lower power consumption solid state system that i can power off the ships power system (most likely 12 vdc). I also want to make sure it doesn't drain their batteries when the ship is parked. What sort of NVR is available for this application.
Cruise Ship Surveillance
Get a Samsung SRM-872.
(Hanwha employee)
The SRM-872 is a mobile rated NVR that runs off of 12-24vDC. You can order it with a spinning HDD or without any drive, and then use the Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW SSD.
There is also an optional SHM-R100 which is a fanless accessory, which may be desirable to prevent the moist air from entering the unit.
NVR has 8 PoE ports. Note that it has a max of 8w PoE per port.
The NVR can be connected to the ignition, so that when the boat is turned off, the NVR safely stops recording and shuts down after a specified period (30 seconds, 1 minute, etc...).
Then when the ignition is turned on, the system fires up, and powers the cameras and starts recording pretty quickly.
It includes GPS, accelerator, I/O box, IR remote, mouse, HDMI/VGA output, & more.
Where is this available for purchase and will it support Hik cams?
Here are the US distributors.
https://www.hanwhasecurity.com/en/sales-and-services/Strategic-Distributors.aspx
It will support ONVIF cameras that are 8w PoE or less for basic video streaming. Advanced features, such as motion detection, analytics, etc., would need to be tested. These advanced features work with Samsung/Hanwha cameras.
Supports up to 5 megapixel cameras, with a total recording throughput of 64mbps.
Thanks for the info on the Samsung, that is definitely worth looking into. What if i wanted to go with exacq vision for an application like this, and I say that because we deal Exacq, and now the customer wants to add cameras to their parking lot, building, dock, and i am more inclined to give him a single solution (NVR on mainland, small NVR on Boat) in order to keep the learning curve the same. Is there a similar open platform option that you all would know about? I remember back a few years ago I saw a windows embedded hardened PC installed in a mobile video cart perhaps something like that would work?
UD1I, IPConfigure offers Orchid Edge VMS for free on the Raspberry Pi (Orange Pi also) and could be a nice platform for your boat applications. Either way it's free with no limitations and you should check it out...

That is an interesting application for the Raspberry Pi / Orange Pi, what are users normally doing for storage and accessories. I have not worked with them that much, so i am a bit green in that department. I know they are a basic little computer you can install an open source OS on but that is about as far as my knowledge goes.
For (1) camera up to 720p you can use the on-board SD card (the Pi's SD card slot has I/O limitations). External USB drives are leveraged when running up to (4) cameras. The community forum is a great resource for getting up to speed on the technical information for the Raspberry Pi running Orchid. http://www.ipconfigure.com/orchid-community/
Alternatively, if you purchase Orchid licenses ($69/camera) you have full access to the IPConfigure tech support team!
