Have Cell Jammers Been Used To Defeat Alarms?

I had a customer play down the reliability of a cellular communicator on an alarm system saying that a criminal will just use a cell jammer.

I know these devices are out there but have they ever been used for this? Case studies?

I am not a criminal but I have to think like one every day.  Cell Jammer would be in my tool belt if I was a bad guy.

Check out this video showing a company testing a customers security system.  They use a cell jammer and cut the phone lines.

It looks like they put the jammer on a RF receiver, not a cell unit, I am not familiar with that model though

I'd be more curious as to what the customer thinks is more reliable versus cellular communication?

Network Communication? What if your power goes out? Or like the telephone, if the incoming line gets cut?

Plain Old Telephone? What if they cut the phone line?

I know of only one case where one was actually used.  I didn't believe it until I got to see the cell tower records.

I have a little experience in this area. I developed the first integrated cellular back up for alarm systems in the late 90s and founded UPLINK. I'm pretty good at RF.

Is it possible? Yes. Likely? No.

The bad person would have to be really smart and experienced. Primarily, they will have to know specific details of the installation and ALL carrier equipment in the area to make this work reliably. And it'd have to be a reliable jam or else they get caught. If they know this information then... highly likely they're an insider. Tough to cover those tracks.

I'm not going to go into how here. But I'll offer the obvious questions to be answered.

- What's the range of these jammers you can buy? Where's the target device(s) to be jammed?

- So, you're going to modify this device for greater range huh? You'll become a beacon directly to your location. YAGI? Where's the target device to be jammed again? Can you stop reflections? Are there 2? See NFPA. What's the S/N ratio at the device(s). Are you sure?

- My advice is just build a big Faraday cage around the targeted installation. Then you can be sure you'll block the radio(s) inside. Nothing to it....

- Finally... with the hundreds of billions of dollars reliant on the business of delivering reliable wireless communications, do you think that the suppliers of such wireless communications, those folks that paid billions for spectrum free of interference, do any monitoring of that spectrum for interference? Are you sure? I wouldn't bet on that.
