Camera Video Quality Worse With ONVIF?

I have heard on a couple occassions that if you view a camera on a VMS when using ONVIF to connect the camera to the VMS that the video quality is not as good as it is if you connect the camera to the VMS using a driver. Has anyone had any experience with this?
