Camera Online, But No Video Stream

Hello,

We have a site with 200+ cameras from a mix of Manufacturers (Axis, Arecont, Pelco, and Sony).  All cameras are connected to the customer's network, which is managed by their IT department.  We have been experiencing a random issue where a camera is accessible through an HTTP connection (i.e. web gui is accessible), but no video stream is displayed.  Therefore, we have no video in the VMS (Milestone).  Most of the time a simple reboot of the camera will resolve the issue and restore the stream.  However, we are trying to determine the root cause to see if we can eliminate this issue.  The issue is not limited to specific cameras and seems to be random.  We have worked with IT to verify that it is not a PoE issue, as there is plenty of power provided at the ports and the demand is well below the PoE budget for the switch.

Has anyone had similar issues? If so, what have you found as the root cause?

My first thought was that they might not allow TCP/UDP port 554 for RTP/RTSP traffic between the server(s) and cameras. But if rebooting the camera solves the problem temporarily, that is much less likely to be the case.

I have seen this kind of behavior when antivirus is installed on Recording Servers and is scanning network traffic. The AV eventually cannot keep up scanning all the RTSP traffic.

Have you tried switching the streaming mode to HTTP in the Management Client to see if there is any improvement? This mode allows the RTSP stream to be sent through http/80 and if HTTP always works, it may be worth a try?

We have been experiencing a random issue where a camera is accessible through an HTTP connection (i.e. web gui is accessible), but no video stream is displayed.

Please clarify, is a video stream is displayed in the the web GUI or not?  Asking because you say ‘web GUI is accessible’ which could mean you can change settings etc, but no stream.

You may want to consider the client's switch. Your cameras could be crashing random ports on the switch and that is why you are losing the RTSP Stream.

Thanks for the feedback all.  I have been working with the client's IT department and brought up the suggestions.  They are analyzing the port activity and monitoring.
